Immigration in the United States

In 2015, the presidential campaigns made a big controversy when the contestant, Donald

Trump stated some strong opinions towards unauthorized immigrants. As Philip L. Martin states

in his letter ("VIEWPOINT: wither US immigration?") "They are bringing drugs. They are

bringing crime. They're rapists.... But some, I assume, are good people". Both Democrats and

Republicans have different ideas in solving the issue of unauthorized immigrants in the United

States. Where the contestant Donald Trump promotes the idea of building a wall and deport all

unauthorized immigrants to their country; While the contestant, Hillary Clinton, wants to expand

DAPA and DACA, and pass an immigration reform and a path to citizenship to help families

stay together. (Martin 305). Immigration in the United States has become an important theme

for finding the best solution to unauthorized immigration.

DACA and DAPA was a project introduced by the former president Barack Obama in

June 2012 and November 2014. DAPA stands for Deferred Action for Parents of Americans,

which grants a work permit that can be renewable every three-years to parents of children that

were born in the United States. This program gives hope for a better future to parents of

Americans and can improve the possibility of getting a decent job, and provide them a normal

life in the United States. Another program that helps millions of young adolescents is DACA.

DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, and grants adolescents and young

adults the opportunity to have a better future in this country. Programs like DAPA and DACA

gives the opportunity to some of the unauthorized immigrants of having a normal life in the

United States. As is mentioned in VOA News article (What are DACA and DAPA?) "The

"deferred action" does not equal full legal status, but instead confers exemption from deportation

and a 3-year, renewable work permit".

People that have benefited from DACA and DAPA have taken good advantage of the

great opportunities that this country offers to its citizens. For example, the opportunity to get a

driver license, build a credit score, apply for a credit card, obtaining a social security number,

getting a job with benefits such as healthcare, and putting utility bills under their name. Besides

all of these benefits, many organizations offer scholarships to people that have the intention of

studying and wanting a career. As stated in the scholarships web (Scholarships for

undocumented students) "There are specific organizations such as TheDream.Us that help

immigrant youth and undocumented students who have received DACA status achieve their

American Dream through the completion of a college education". All of these benefits help

millions of people find a greater stability in the United States and gives freedom of making a

decision, either getting a job or attending a college for a career.

President Donald Trump's plan of solving the issue of unauthorized immigration is to

build a wall between the United States and Mexico. A wall can reduce the entry of unauthorized

people, and drugs into the United States. As Esteban Flores states in his review (Walls of

separation: an analysis of three 'successful' border walls). "the U. S-Mexican wall have claimed

that it would help to fight drug smuggling by the Mexican cartels....and discouraging immigrants

from attempting to cross in the first place". The border between the United States and Mexico is

approximately 1,900 miles in distance, and the estimates for building the wall varies from one

million to twenty million per mile.

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised Trump's idea for a wall as a

"great idea" and a "great success" claiming on Twitter that his own wall "has stopped all illegal

immigration". While Israel's wall has definitely not stopped all illegal immigration, it has

assisted in cutting it down significantly". (Flores). Countries that count with a wall against illegal

immigration, and are successful like the Israeli wall; definitely do not realize the longitude of the

U. S and Mexican border. Besides the longitude and highly estimated cost of the border wall, the

increase of federal agents will have to increase for the wall to be successful. As is stated in the

review of Esteban Flores (Walls of Separation: An analysis of three 'successful' border walls)

"Only if the United States were to vastly increase the size of its Border Patrol...making it easier

to patrol and respond to security breaches".
