QUIZ-1 (submission: before 12.30 p.m. on 02.04.

2015, accept only handwritten answers)

1 What are ultimate limit states (ULS)? What will happen when they are violated?

2 What are serviceability limit states (SLS)? What will happen when they are exceeded?

3 How does factor of safety used in ULS design and SLS design?

4 Calculate the design resistance of the connection detail shown below. The cover plates are
made of S460 steel and connected with non-preloaded bolts of diameter 16 mm and class 4.6.
Assume that in both cases, the shear plane passes through the unthreaded portions of the bolts.

5 Calculate the shear resistance of the welded end plate-to-beam connection shown below.
Assume the throat thickness of the fillet weld is 6 mm and the steel grade is S 275.
6 If the beam in Question 5 is to be connected to a column using eight class 4.6, M16 bolts as
shown below, calculate the maximum shear resistance of the connection.

7 Check that the double angle web cleat beam-to-column connection detail shown below is
suitable to resist the design shear force, VEd, of 200 kN. Assume the steel grade is S 275 and the
bolts are class 5.6 and diameter 12 mm.
8 Check whether the M20 bolts of grade 4.6 provided in the bracing connection (bolts in bracing
connection and column connection) shown are safe. The bracing member is at 40 to the horizontal.
The end distance and spacing are 50 mm each.
