QUIZ-2 (submission: before 10.30 a.m. on 20.04.

2015, accept only handwritten answers)

1. Check that the column (254x254x107) baseplate (t=25mm) shown below is suitable to resist
an axial design load, NEd, of 1550 kN. Assume that the foundations are of concrete of
compressive cylinder strength, fck, of 20 N mm2 and that the baseplate is made of S235 steel.

2. Select and check a suitable beam section using S 275 steel to support the loads shown below
(Qk= 10 kN, gk= 3 kN/m, and qk= 2 kN/m). Assume beam is laterally unrestrained and that it sits
on 125 mm bearings at each end.

3. A cantilever beam is needed to resist the loading shown below. Select a suitable UB section in
S 355 steel to satisfy bending and shear criteria only assuming full lateral restraint.
4. The figure shows a simply supported beam and cantilever with uniformly distributed loads applied to
it. Using grade S 235 steel and assuming full lateral restraint, select and check a suitable beam section.

5. A cantilevered 305x165x54 stub beam is subject to a factored action of 90kN, 450mm from the fixed
end. Determine the weld size required.
90 kN

450

6. Check the frame stability of the structure given below (HED = wind load + equivalent horizontal force)

Loading for end frame: factored roof load = 150 kN, factored floor load = 650 kN

7. Briefly discuss the importance of structural bracing for structures.
