1 Introduction
The AmosConnect Anti-Virus service is a combination of 2 services. The actual anti-virus software
provided by Sophos and the updates sent through AmosConnect. This guide will explain how the total
software package works and is installed.
There is updated Sophos installer on our Stratos FTP site from time to time, so please check it regularly
prior to the installation:

http://ftp.amosconnect.com/anti-virus/
Credentials: anti-virus / Acav2008
There is a most updated zip file with the date as the filename.

1.1 Service Overview

The software can be installed on a whole computer network or just the single stand-alone PC. These 2
implementations differ slightly in the way they are installed.
1.1.1 Network Implementation

In this scenario the computer which also has AmosConnect installed will function as an update
repository. Other computers on the network can access this repository to update the anti-virus software
on those machines. On the main AmosConnect computer the Anti-Virus Server AND Client software

3
must be installed. On the other computers on the network only the Anti-Virus Client needs to be
installed.

1.1.2 Stand-Alone Implementation

In this scenario only 1 computer is available and is the only one requiring virus protection. In this case

only the update scripts and the anti-virus software is installed. AmosConnect MUST be installed on this

machine as well.

4
2 Installing the Software
First determine if you want to install AmosConnect Anti-Virus on multiple PCs in a network or just a
single stand-alone machine.

In the case of a network installation the following 2 steps must be done in order:
Install the AmosConnect Anti-Virus Server software (chapter 2.2)
Install the AmosConnect Anti-Virus Client software (chapter 2.3)

In the case of a stand-alone installation no server or client installation is necessary and you can go
directly to the Stand-Alone installation (chapter 2.4)

2.2 Installing the Anti-Virus Server:

Now please run the AmosConnect CD sent to you for the onboard Installation, look for a folder named
‘Anti-Virus (ACAV)_AVCD-ddmmyyyy’ , then click on the folder ‘CD’ and select a HTML application
‘Stratos’

5
You will see the following installation menu:

Select option 1, ‘Install the AmosConnect Anti-Virus Server’, the following will show and click on ‘OK’:

6
Then the installer copies the installation files and created the folders itself:

Click on ‘ok’ when the following shows:

The installer is now trying to create a Sophosupdate account on the windows, please enter ‘password’ as
the password here:

7
When the creation completes, click on ‘OK’:

Also click on ‘OK’ when you see the following messages:

8
2.3 Installing the Anti-Virus Client:

Select the second option ‘Install the AmosConnect Anti-Virus Client:

Click on ‘OK’:

9
This part is very important; if you are installing the client on the same computer of the Anti-Virus Server,
please enter ‘127.0.0.1’ or the Computer Name of this computer. If you are installing the client on
another PC in the same LAN, please enter either the correct IP address of the server computer or the
computer name of the server:

Please make sure the network card is enabled and is connected to the LAN:

10
Enter ‘password’ as the password:

Click on ‘OK’ when the following message shows, this indicates that the client installer is located
successfully for the client installation.

11
This may take a couple of minutes, so please be patient and do not turn off the computer. Upon
successful installation the Sophos Anti-Virus system tray icon will appear:

12
2.4 Installing the Anti-Virus on a Stand Alone PC:

If there is no onboard network and only a single PC needs to be protected by the AmosConnect Anti-
Virus, only installing the Stand Alone version is required:

Select the third option ‘Install the AmosConnect Anti-Virus on a Stand Alone PC’:

This is the only step required to install the software on a single PC. No server or client software is
necessary.
TIP: Upon clicking this option the installer will do the following actions; Copy over all relevant files to
the computer. Configure the AmosConnect API Generate an anti-virus update subscription email.
Install the Sophos Anti-Virus software. Upon successful installation the system tray icon will show up
similar to the client installation.

3 Frequently Asked Questions:

1. At Client installation I receive an error “SAVCID network share unavailable”, what is

happening?

Ans: This means that the installation script could either not connect to the Server installation or could
not locate the central shared installation directory. Please verify the following settings:
 Verify that the computer name of the Server was typed in correctly
 Verify that the folder ‘Interchk’ is shared on the Server machine:
o Go to program files -> folder ‘Sophos’ -> ‘Interchk’
o Right click this folder and select ‘Sharing and Security’. Make sure the shared name is
‘SAVCID’:

14
 Click on ‘Permissions’ and there should be a user name ‘Everyone’. Full control
should be granted to this user:

15
2. After Client install a grey shield icon shows up, but there’s a red cross, what is happening?
Ans: This error occurs after the Sophos Auto-Update client has been successfully installed,
but can’t update properly afterwards:

This can be caused by either an incorrect password for the update account or the SophosUpdate
account is missing entirely. In some cases folder permissions may not have been set correctly.
Please check the following settings:

 Verify that the password typed in during installation is correct. You can correct this
after the fact by right clicking on the shield system tray icon and selecting Configure
Updating.
 The following is the example of server-client mode of Anti-Virus. The client is
installed on the server.
o The address is \\127.0.0.1\Savcid\ESXP\
o User Name: SophosUpdate
o Password: password
o Confirm pasword: password

16
 If there is another client un the LAN, make sure the path of the server is
correct:
o The address is \\ Server computername\Savcid\ESXP\
o Or \\ Server IP address\Savcid\ESXP\
o User Name: SophosUpdate
o Password: password
o Confirm password: password

17
3. Anti-Virus updates will be sent to AmosConnect email Client, how can I view the record of the
updates:
Ans: All update emails can be viewed in the API messages System folder within the
AmosConnect Inbox:

18
4. I’m receiving updates which show in the SendQueue, but they aren’t processed?
Ans: This issue will manifest itself similar to the screenshot below:

These queued message are recognizable by the fact that they are sent Via API and do not
disappear even after waiting for more than 2 minutes.
This can be caused by one or both of the following:
 Process inbound API messages hasn’t been enabled. This can be resolved by
going to Remote -> Other Services -> System tab:

19
 The application definition hasn’t been properly created / edited incorrectly.
This can be verified by going to Setup -> Application Definition. There should
be an entry named ‘ACAV’.

Select and click Details. A new screen show which should exactly match the
information below:
Address: ACAV
Name: ACAV
Command: c:\Program Files\Sophos\Scripts\SophosIDE.bat
Directory: c:\Program Files\Sophos\IDETemp
API Options selected: Export Attachments
o If it doesn’t match, please correct where necessary.
o If the entry is missing completely, please create a new Application
Definition using the same details.
