S.F. defends sanctuary status as backlash mounts

SAN FRANCISCO The attacks on San
Francisco and other cities with similar
immigration policies began moments after
a jury acquitted a Mexican man of killing a
woman on a popular pier, some calling for a
boycott of the city that fiercely defends its
reputation as a refuge for all.
President Donald Trump called the verdict
a complete travesty of justice, and U.S.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions demanded
cities like San Francisco scrap immigration
policies that bar cooperation with federal
deportation efforts.
Twitter users turned to the hashtags
(hash)BoycottSanFrancisco and
(hash)kateswall to demand construction of
the U.S.-Mexico border wall that Trump has
called for. Conservative politicians and
celebrities such as former Alaska Gov. Sarah
Palin and actor James Woods lambasted the
city as unsafe.
City officials vowed to stand behind their
sanctuary city policy.

supervisor.
This family has been through hell, but
there are people, including our president,
who continue to use this tragedy to demo-
nize immigrants and to slander immigrants

San Francisco was among the first U.S.
cities to establish a sanctuary law in 1989
as part of a national wave of local policies
intended to help Central American refugees.
Since then, the city consistently has been
an early adopter of some of the most immi-
grant-friendly policies nationwide, and it
takes pride in serving as a safe place for reli-
gious and gender minorities, non-English
speakers and people in the country illegal-
ly. Hundreds of other cities have similar
immigration policies.
A judge did not allow immigration poli-
tics into the courtroom for Garcia Zarates

Zarate of first-degree murder, saying he had
come to the pier with a gun and a desire to
hurt someone.
His attorneys argued that he found a gun

Glenn Pearman Smith went home to the Lord on November
12, 2017. He was born in 1925 to Glenn Allison and Mary
Emerson Smith in Mill City, OR. Glenns family moved to
California during the Depression. In 1942, they moved to
Rosemead, California, where he graduated from El Monte High
School. During WWII, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, 102nd
Infantry (Ozark Division). He was awarded the Bronze Star
Medal for carrying a wounded American Ofcer out of a German mineeld. After
the war, he attended the Military Tribunal at Nuremberg where he witnessed former
Nazi leaders Goering, Keitel, and Hess stand trial for war crimes. Upon returning
to California, he attended Occidental College, graduating summa cum laude and a
Masters Degree from Claremont College. He married Kathleen Hudson in 1949 and
began his career in education as a Junior High School teacher. Then, he accepted a
position at San Francisco State University as Assistant to the President, and later
becoming Vice President of Student Services, during the tumultuous 1960s. In
1973, he became Chancellor-Superintendent of the three community colleges in the
San Mateo County Community College District, retiring as Chancellor Emeritus
in 1991. He also received an Honorary Doctorate from the College of Notre Dame
in Belmont, California.. He was devoted to his community and served in many
capacities: as President of the San Mateo Rotary Club, Board Member and President
of the San Mateo County Mental Health Assoc., Elder at First Presbyterian Church
of Burlingame, Ex-Ofcio Director of the San Mateo County Exposition and Fair
Assoc., Chairman of the San Mateo County Economic Development Assoc., Board
Member of Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation and President of the Board of

FDA approves first-of-a-kind
test for cancer gene profiling
U.S. regulators have approved a first-of-
a-kind test that looks for mutations in hun-
dreds of cancer genes at once, giving a more
complete picture of whats driving a
patients tumor and aiding efforts to match
treatments to those flaws.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
approved Foundation Medicines test for
patients with advanced or widely spread
cancers, and the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services proposed covering it.
The dual decisions, announced late
Thursday, will make tumor-gene profiling
available to far more cancer patients than
the few who get it now, and lead more insur-
ers to cover it.

First baby from a uterus
transplant in the U.S. born in Dallas
The first birth as a result of a womb trans-
plant in the United States has occurred in
Texas, a milestone for the U.S. but one
achieved several years ago in Sweden.
A woman who had been born without a
uterus gave birth to the baby at Baylor
University Medical Center in Dallas.
Hospital spokesman Craig Civale con-
firmed Friday that the birth had taken place,
but said no other details are available. The
hospital did not identify the woman, citing
her privacy.
Baylor has had a study underway for sev-
eral years to enroll up to 10 women for
uterus transplants. In October 2016, the
hospital said four women had received
transplants but that three of the wombs had
to be removed because of poor blood flow.
The hospital would give no further infor-
mation on how many transplants have been
performed since then. But Time magazine,
which first reported the U.S. babys birth,
says eight have been done in all, and that
another woman is currently pregnant as a
result.

Time is running out for lawmakers

WASHINGTON The congressional
clock is running out as a handful of bills are
batted around Capitol Hill to reauthorize a
critical foreign intelligence collection pro-
gram that expires in four weeks.
The House intelligence committee on
Friday passed the latest one 13-8. The vote
split along party lines after harsh
exchanges across the political aisle.
Democrats and Republicans agree the law
is invaluable in helping the U.S. track for-
eign spies, terrorists, weapons traffickers
and cyber criminals. But some members of
Congress and privacy advocates want
greater protections for the communica-
tions of Americans that are picked up dur-
ing the collection of the foreign intelli-
gence.
While they support reauthorization, all
the Democrats on the House intelligence
committee voted no because it included a
provision about unmasking. Unmasking is
the procedure for officials to find out the
identities of American citizens or legal per-
manent residents mentioned in intelligence
reports. Officials with the appropriate secu-
rity clearances can ask for the names to
understand the intelligence being con-
veyed.
The GOP wants stricter oversight to pro-
tect the privacy of U.S. citizens. Democrats
see a political stunt related to GOP claims
that members of President Donald Trumps
transition team were improperly unmasked.
The committees chairman, Republican
Devin Nunes of California, says this was
the case. The ranking Democrat, Adam
Schiff of California, counters that there is
no evidence any identities were improperly
revealed. Even if they were, Schiff says, the
issue should be addressed in separate legis-
lation.
So far, the two can only agree to disagree
about that.
The biggest sticking point in the larger
debate over reauthorizing the surveillance
authority is whether to require the FBI to
get a warrant if it wants to search the intel-
ligence database of information that the
government lawfully collects on foreigners
abroad.

Two others have also been arrested and
charged as accessories to the crime, accord-
ing to prosecutors. Four appeared in San
Mateo County Superior Court Friday where
they were appointed to the private defender
program.
Fernando Lozano, 23, of East Palo Alto,
was charged with residential burglary, two
felony counts of assault on an officer,
felony hit-and-run and resisting arrest.
Ulises Jaimes, 27, of Redwood City, was
charged with felony first-degree burglary
and conspiracy. Both were caught near the
scene Wednesday and appeared in court,
according to prosecutors. Gabriel Godoy,
22, of East Palo Alto, who was on the lam
for two days, was arrested around 1 p.m.
Friday at the home where evidence of other
thefts and weapons were located, according
to the Sheriffs Office. He was booked into
jail on felony burglary and misdemeanor
resisting arrest charges.
Its a very dangerous set of individuals
[and] the Sheriffs Office did outstanding
work to get them all in custody, said
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. We are
very fortunate that nobody was seriously
injured.
Armando Diaz Jaimes, 29, of East Palo
Alto, and Araceli Arroyo Martinez, 25, East
Palo Alto, were also arrested and charged
with accessory to burglary for allegedly try-
ing to help Ulises Jaimes flee Wednesdays
crime scene, according to prosecutors.
The incident began around 1:30 p.m. Nov.
29, when the victim heard someone kicking
in the side door of her home. She hid in what
deputies called a safe location where she
could see the suspects rummaging through
her property but they couldnt see her.
Wagstaffe said its believed she was able to
hide on her roof after accessing it from a
bedroom.
She was in fear for her life, absolutely,
said sheriffs Detective Sal Zuno.
As deputies arrived, they found Lozano,
Ulises Jaimes and Godoy exiting the home.
They allegedly ignored orders to stop and
Ulises Jaimes and Godoy fled on foot into a
wooded area near the house. Lozano instead
got into a vehicle that had been backed into
the driveway and took off, according to
prosecutors. He allegedly narrowly missed
two deputies, sideswiped a patrol car and hit
another patrol car that was parked at a near-
by intersection. He continued toward Linda
Vista where he allegedly crashed into a citi-
zens car and then fled on foot, according to
prosecutors.
Deputies, police from San Bruno and
Burlingame, K9 units and a helicopter were
dispatched to search for the suspects as res-
idents were advised to avoid the area. The
search was eventually called off around 6
p.m. after Ulises Jaimes and Lozano were
caught, according to prosecutors and
deputies.
Lozano was allegedly caught with the key
to the car in his possession, and Ulises
Jaimes was found hours later near Skyline
Boulevard. Armando Diaz Jaimes and
Martinez pulled up in a car and honked their
horn, which prompted Ulises Jaimes to
emerge from some bushes were hed been
allegedly hiding, according to prosecutors.
The sheriffs crime suppression unit found
Godoy on Friday at a home where further
evidence from possible other crimes was
found, Zuno said.
The Sheriffs Office will coordinate with
other local law enforcement departments
and is asking anyone who recognizes the
allegedly stolen property to contact them.
Photos of the evidence show a semi-auto-
matic handgun and three loaded clips, a
Social Security card and what appears to be a
birth certificate from Santa Clara County.
Other evidence includes coins, numerous
watches, rings, earrings, a jewelry box,
necklaces and a large gold-colored skull
pendant on a chain.
The four suspects who appeared in court
Friday are expected back Monday with their
appointed attorneys and to enter a plea.
Godoy has been arrested but had not yet
been charged by the District Attorneys
Office as of Friday evening. Ulises Jaimes
and Lozano remain in custody on $500,000
bail, while Armando Diaz Jaimes and
Martinez were booked on $100,000 bail.

has persistently followed Trump the first
year of his presidency, angering the presi-
dent and repeatedly distracting from his
agenda. Flynns plea came as Republican
senators labored to pass a far-reaching tax
bill, which would be a significant victory
for Trump.
On Friday, the president ignored
reporters shouted questions as he welcomed
the Libyan prime minister to the White
House, and aides canceled media access to a
later meeting between the two. He did
appear briefly at an afternoon White House
holiday reception for the media, where he
offered seasons greetings and departed
without addressing the Mueller investiga-
tion.
Early on in his administration, Trump had
taken a particular interest in the status of
the Flynn investigation. Former FBI
Director James Comey, whose firing in May
precipitated the appointment of Mueller as
special counsel, has said Trump asked him
in a private Oval Office meeting to consider
ending the investigation into Flynn.
Comey has said he found the encounter so
shocking that he prepared an internal memo
about it.
Flynn, who was interviewed by the FBI
days after Trumps inauguration, was forced
to resign on Feb. 13 following news reports
indicating that the Trump White House had
been warned by Obama administration offi-
cials that he had discussed sanctions with
Kislyak and was therefore compromised and
potentially vulnerable to blackmail.
White House officials including Pence,
who had declared publicly that Flynn never
discussed sanctions, said they had been mis-
led.
The court case Friday concerns a series of
conversations that Flynn had with Kislyak
during the transition period between the
November election and the Jan. 20 inaugu-
ration.

people in this situation want to provide some
kind of comfort to the immediate family, but
just dont have the verbal tools to do so in an
assuring manner.
Learning Funeral Etiquette can be
useful. Using the right words at the right
time is an appropriate way to show that you
care, and in situations like this can be of
great help when provided correctly.
Standard condolences such as I am sorry
for your loss have become routine and
generic. A personalized phrase can be
welcomed such as John touched many
lives or I will miss John. DO NOT ask
the cause of death, offer advice or make
comments that would diminish the
importance of the loss such as Oh, youre
young and can marry again.
Other ways to demonstrate your support
include: 1. Listening. The family may feel
the need to express their anxiety, and giving
them that opportunity can be therapeutic; 2.
An embrace. This can show that you care
without the need for words; 3. Offering your
services. This shows the family that you are

cuss in the next few
days whether to
resign following
allegations of sexu-
al misconduct, but
his health will be
the paramount fac-
tor and not pressure

Arnold Reed told a news conference
Friday that he will be meeting with
doctors to assess the medical progno-
sis for the 88-year-old Conyers fol-
lowing a second round of medical
tests.
Facing growing calls for his resig-
nation, Conyers returned to Detroit
from Washington on Tuesday and was
hospitalized the next day. He remains
there although no details of his condi-
tion have been released.
We will discuss in the next day or so
what Mr. Conyers plans to do. As you
know his health is not the best. Its not
what it should be, Reed said. It will
be Congressman John Conyers who
decides what it is he is going to do.

Reed told reporters that he had not
spoken Conyers in two days, allowing
his client to rest.
Multiple women have accused
Conyers of sexual misconduct includ-
ing inappropriate touching and harass-
ment.
Striking a defiant tone, Reed contin-
ued to stress that Conyers denies he
sexually-harassed anyone.
A number of fellow Democrats have
called on Conyers to resign, includ-

and fellow Michigan Rep. Dan
Kildee. Republican House Speaker
Paul Ryan has also urged Conyers to
step down.
The House Ethics Committee has
been reviewing the allegations against
Conyers, who is the longest-serving
current member of the House. He has
stepped aside from his post as ranking
member of the House Foreign Affairs
Committee.
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic Venezuelas
socialist government and its opposition sought Friday to
jumpstart negotiations on resolving the countrys econom-
ic and political crisis, pressured by international sanctions
and a looming presidential election.
The planned two-day meetings in the Dominican
Republic are the first formal talks since anti-government
protests collapsed in July with a toll of more than 120 dead
and thousands detained. Given the scant results of previous
attempts at dialogue, including talks last year mediated by
the Vatican, expectations are low.
But some analysts expressed optimism a deal could be
struck because the cash-strapped administration of
President Nicolas Maduro is desperately looking for sup-
port as it tries to refinance Venezuelas huge foreign debt.
That will give the opposition a foothold to press their
demands, analysts said.
I dont think weve seen the stars align like we have at
this moment, said Geoff Ramsey, a Venezuela researcher at
the Washington Office on Latin America.
Gunmen attack agriculture
institute in Pakistan, killing 12
PESHAWAR, Pakistan Islamist militants stormed a
provincial government complex for agricultural research in
northwest Pakistan on Friday, killing 12 people including
students and wounding 35 others, police and rescue officials
said.
Police and military troops killed three attackers during a
firefight and while clearing the complex in Peshawar, the
capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, they said.
The main Taliban militant group, Tehrik-e-Taliban
Pakistan, claimed responsibility saying the place they
attacked was housing a secret intelligence office.
Police chief Salahuddin Mahsud of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
province said attackers opened fire on the main gate of a
provincial agricultural department complex, initially
wounding two guards and two students.

Stocks mostly recoup their losses after slide

Wall Street took investors on a
turbulent ride Friday as stock
indexes veered into a steep slide
that knocked 350 points off the
Dow Jones industrial average
before the market eventually
clawed back most of its losses.
The market stumbled after for-
mer national security adviser
Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to
lying to the FBI and said he would
cooperate with the probe into
Russian meddling in the U.S. pres-
idential election.
That raised concerns among
traders that the White Houses leg-
islative agenda, including a tax
overhaul under debate in
Congress, could be at risk. Those
jitters were allayed somewhat by
early afternoon, when Senate
Republicans signaled they have
enough votes to push forward on
the tax legislation.
Once the Senate did announce
that they had sufficient votes to
move forward, there was a respite
and we did come off the lower lev-

Hyundai Motor Co. sales fell 9 percent to
55,435 vehicles. Sales of its Tucson SUV
were up 51 percent but couldnt offset
steep declines in car sales. Genesis luxury
sales rose slightly.
Toyota Motor Corp. sales fell 3 percent to
191,617 even though the revamped Camry
sedan and the RAV4 small SUV posted
record November numbers. Increased truck
and SUV sales were offset by steep declines
in car sales. Luxury Lexus sales were down
7 percent.
Honda Motor Co. sales rose 8 percent to
133,156. Sales of the CR-V SUV jumped 25
percent. Luxury Acura sales were up 10
percent.
General Motors Co.s sales fell 3 percent
to 245,387. Cadillac sales dropped 13

and SUVs. Ford sold 72,769 F-Series
pickups, marking that vehicles best

fell 5.5 percent.
Nissan Motor Co. didnt report its sales due
to a computer problem. Based on

Postal Service more freedom to
raise stamp costs beyond the rate of
inflation. The Postal Regulatory
Commission announced its deci-
sion Friday.
The commissions proposal
would allow the beleaguered Postal
Service to increase the price of a
first-class stamp by an additional 2
percent above the rate of inflation
to avoid bankruptcy and improve
mail and package delivery. The cur-
rent price is 49 cents, so the
increase could mean an increase of
up to a few cents each year, depend-
ing on rates of inflation.

Menlo falls in finals

CAMPBELL There was one certainty
heading into the Central Coast Section
Division V championship game at
Westmont High School one team was
going to walk away with its schools first-
ever CCS football title.
Despite playing in its fifth title game in
the last nine years, Menlo School came up
short as undefeated and top-seeded Gilroy
completed its storybook season with 38-21
victory over the Knights.
It was a tough game, Menlo head coach
Mark Newton said.
Much like Gilroy did in the semifinals to
another Peninsula Athletic League team in
Hillsdale, the Mustangs, who actually
trailed at halftime against Menlo, dominat-
ed the second half as they pulled away for
their 13-straight win of the season.
No. 2 Menlo (8-5) certainly didnt do
itself any favors after the break, as three of
the Knights four turnovers came in the sec-
ond half. Add in four of Gilroys seven
sacks, and Joseph Barnes rushing for 156 of
his 230 yards and three of his four touch-
downs in the final two quarters, and the
Knights simply were overwhelmed by the
Mustangs.
Big plays and turnovers, it may be
cliche, but they mattered a lot in the game,
Newton said. Really, those were the differ-
ence.
Menlos second-half performance was in
stark contrast to how the Knights performed
in the first two quarters as they did a good
job containing Gilroys explosive offense
while also moving the ball consistently
themselves.
After Menlo forced the Mustangs to go
three-and-out on the first series of the game,
the Mustangs got the ball right back as they
recovered a fumble when Knights quarter-

With possession at the Menlo 39, Gilroy
ground out a 10-play drive, converting a
fourth-and-1 at the 30, but stalled out at the
13-yard line. The Mustangs had to settle for
a 32-yard field goal and 3-0 lead midway
through the first quarter.
After moving the ball from the 35 to near
midfield on their next drive, the Knights
were forced to punt, but like Gilroy, Menlo
got the ball right back when Xavier
Dickinson fell on a Mustangs fumble at
their 14.

When Half Moon Bay triumphed in the
rivalry Skull Game 45-7 earlier this sea-
son, it marked a precarious loss for Terra
Nova.
Not only was it the first time the Cougars
won the annual showdown since 2014, it
also left Terra Nova winless through four
Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division
games. It wasnt until the final week of
league play during a slate of games
rescheduled from earlier in the season due to
the North Bay fires the Tigers broke a
four-game losing streak and, by the skin of
their fangs, qualified for the Central Coast
Section playoffs with a slight 17-14 win
over Burlingame.
Now, in a turn of events that seemed
unforeseeable after the Nov. 3 Skull
Game, a rivalry that has long favored Terra
Nova which leads the regular-season
classic with an all-time record of 32-16-5
the feud will carry over into the postseason
for the first time ever, with the Tigers and
the Cougars meeting Saturday night at
Sequoia High School for the CCS Open
Division III championship.

The Menlo defense remained stout the rest
of the half, forcing Gilroy punts on its next
two possessions, but with 1:33 left in the
half, the Mustangs took a 10-7 lead.
Starting from its own 18, Gilroy marched
72 yards on nine plays for the score.

The difference for Terra Nova has been the
return of two promising linemen seniors
Dan Constantine and Derek Franson both
of whom were injured in the Oct. 6 PAL Bay
Division opener against Aragon. Both
returned for the Skull Game but were only
cleared to practice in the week leading up to
the game, with Franson, a center and defen-
sive tackle, not seeing any days of practice
and jumping into action against HMB cold,
according to Adams.
Yes they were in the Skull Game but
they werent themselves, Adams said.

ball, Vasseurs dream of becoming the next

Woods atop leaderboard, but only briefly

NASSAU, Bahamas One of the biggest
cheers at the Hero World Challenge came from
seeing the name Tiger Woods moved to the top
of the leaderboard.
It just wasnt there for long.
In another impressive showing in his latest
comeback from back surgeries, Woods built on
a solid start with a 31 on the front nine at
Albany Golf Club that briefly gave him the
lead Friday. He stalled on the back nine with a
pair of bogeys and not enough birdie chances,
and he settled for a 4-under 68.
Successful, Woods said, when asked to
describe his round in one word.
When the second round ended, Woods was
five shots behind Charley Hoffman, who had a
63 that might have sent fans into a frenzy if
they had been watching.
Hoffman made 12 birdies, closing with five
in a row . He was at 12-under 132 and had a
three-shot lead over Jordan Spieth (67) and
Tommy Fleetwood (69). Hoffman made only

with 57 yards on 23 carries.

then really raised hopes with his eagle on the
par-5 ninth, set up by a 3-wood into the wind
from 265 yards.
Hit up in the air and took something off of
it and cut it back into the wind, he said.
He made the 20-foot putt to reach 8 under.
Behind him, Hoffman made bogey on the par-3

But he was anxious to run the ball.
It was Simbecks arm, however, that gave
the Knights a 14-10 lead at halftime. With

into the arms of Landon Smith in the middle
of the end zone with 40 seconds left in the
first half.
We were great at halftime, Newton said.
In the second half, however, Gilroy exert-
ed its superiority. The Mustangs defensive
line dominated Menlo as it seemed Simbeck
was under pressure nearly every time he
dropped back to pass. Simbeck finished the
eighth. Woods was alone in the lead, and the
workers at the white scoreboard to the left of
the green quickly moved his name to the top as
some 100 people that constitutes a large

a smattering of Hes back! and even a few
mentions about the Masters.
Woods missed it. He was on his way to the
10th tee. By the time he saw a leaderboard, it
was getting crowded at the top with Hoffman
making his run, Spieth chipping in for birdie
and setting up another with a tough chip, and
Fleetwood overcoming a double bogey-bogey
start to his back nine with three straight
birdies.
I saw somewhere on the back nine, I think
there was like five guys at 8 under or something
like that, something weird like that, Woods
said.
A case could be made that his name among
them was weird.
His past is enough to merit legend status in
this field. Woods has 79 victories on the PGA
Tour, compared with 81 for the rest of the field.
But he hasnt won in more than four years, and
this is only his 20th start since the first of four
game 11-of-22 passing for 172 yards and
two touchdowns but also two intercep-
tions.
The Knights couldnt do anything with
their opening drive of the third quarter,
while Gilroy drove 62 yards on 13 plays to
take the lead for good, with Barnes scoring
from 2 yards out for a 17-14 lead.
Menlos next drive ended in the arms of a
Gilroy defensive back, which gave the
Mustangs the ball at the Knights 44. Nine
plays later, Barnes went in from 2 yards out
on the first play of the fourth quarter to up
the Mustangs lead to 24-14.
Late in the game, the Mustangs iced it
with two long Barnes scores. The first went
for 41 yards with 4:04 left for a 30-14 lead
and his fifth of the night went for 50 yards
with just under three minutes left.

quicker, and thats where he struggled. He had
an eagle attempt from just short of the 15th
green, about 45 feet away, that he ran 15 feet by
the hole. He missed that for a three-putt par.
He still played the par 5s in 4 under, a five-
shot improvement from the opening round.
And he showed his creative side on the par-3
17th. Facing a long putt over a hump with the
grain running away from him, Woods chose to
chip it off the putting surface and along the
fringe to be able to better judge the speed. It
settled 3 feet away for a par.
He hit the crease and he was gone,
Newton said.
In between those Mustangs scores,
Menlo notched its third touchdown of the
night. Simbeck hit Kevin Chen with back-
to-back passes for 9 and 32 yards and then
Simbeck did the rest, running the final 11
yards on two plays with the score com-
ing on a 1-yard run around right end.
While disappointed with the loss, Newton
realized how much he team had to work just
to get into position to win a section title.
Injuries ravaged the Knights this season and
to be one of the final teams standing in CCS
was a tremendous accomplishment.
This team dealt with a tremendous
amount of adversity, Newton said. Im
incredibly proud of my boys.

mally when he accepted the defen-
sive coordinator position in April
2013. Two days after he was hired,
the offensive coordinator job at
Serra opened up. And Vasseur imme-
diately recommended Lo.
I called Lo and was like, this is
the greatest day ever, Vasseur said.
The Vass and Lo Show started in
2009, when the two started coach-
ing together at Gilroy High School.
Serra marks their third high school
assignment together, though they
son of semipro football with the
Central Coast Barnstormers, who
play out of Gilroy High School.
And while Vasseur was innovating
Serras three-tiered defense, Lo quick-
ly transformed Serra from the wing-T
offense it utilized for many years to a
more pass-intensive spread.
[Walsh] wanted to go up-tempo
and wanted to start throwing the
ball, Lo said.
Serras aerial attack spiked in
2013. After a 2012 season in which
the Padres gained 4,538 total yards
but only 647 of those were pass-
ing yards the 2013 Padres
gained 5,749 total yards with
2,586 coming by way of the pass.
Serra surpassed both those marks
last season with 6,034 total offen-
sive yards, including 3,186 pass-
ing yards; each of those marks set
new all-time program records.
This year, the simpatico between
Vasseur and Lo is evident in the per-
formance of senior Isiah Kendrick. A
renowned running back who sur-
mark in last Saturdays CCS semifi-
nal win over Valley Christian he is
currently sitting on 2,555 career
rushing yards but has emerged as a
key defensive played as a free safety,
something stemming from his early
underclassman work in the backfield.
Another key two-way player was
senior lineman Nio Mafi, who was
lost for the season in Serras CCS
playoff opener against Mitty. He was
a central figure in Serras regular-sea-
son win over St. Francis a hotly
contested 31-21 victory but will
be sorely missed against the Lancers
stellar defensive front, including
three Division I commits in senior
linebacker Junior Fehoko, junior
outside linebacker Josh Pakola and
senior defensive tackle Tyler Manoa.
Theyre a very stout front
seven, Lo said. Even with Nio,
its tough moving them. So, it
will definitely be a challenge.

Its a question that has long befuddled and
endlessly amused fans of The Room, the
infamously bad 2003 movie Wiseau direct-
ed, self-financed and starred in. Where did
this billboard-self-promoting, Terminator-
sunglasses-wearing Frozen Caveman
Lawyer knockoff come from? (He has
claimed New Orleans but investigation
and his accent suggest Poland.) How old
is he? (No one knows but older than he has
said.) And where did he get his apparent
wealth? (The movie cost $6 million to
make, partly because Wiseau insisted on
shooting on both 35mm film and digital.)

Obsession, jealousy and family secrets
all figure into the tumultuous relationship
in Sam Shepards Fool for Love, present-
ed by San Jose Stage Company.
Its set in a seedy motel on the edge of the
Mojave Desert where May (Allison F. Rich)
is trying to start a new life. However,
theres a complication when her former
lover, the dirty and dangerous Eddie (Rob
August), has found her and wants to take her
back to Wyoming to live in his trailer on a
ranch.
May is torn, angrily ordering Eddie to
leave, then beseeching him to stay when he
starts to go. Fueled by tequila, their con-
frontations are sometimes erotic, some-
times violent.
no interest in answering. Thats because
The Disaster Artist isnt really about
Tommy Wiseau. Its about James Franco.
A quick recap for the uninitiated. The
Room ran for two weeks in Los Angeles
(Wiseau wanted it to qualify for the Oscars)
and was roundly panned as a singularly terri-
ble movie. But it found a Rocky Horror
Picture Show-sized cult, with sold-out mid-
night screenings that continue to run.
Devotees thrilled to the movies cheesy
filmmaking, its strange, woeful imitation
of Tennessee Williams dialogue (Youre
tearing me apart, Lisa!), its bizarre narra-
tive incongruities (one character announces
having cancer only for it never to be talked
of again) and its proliferation of spoons
throughout (which fans bring to throw at
screenings).
Wiseaus friend and co-star Greg Sestero
later wrote the 2013 book, with author Tom
Shes jealous of his relationship with
another woman, whom she calls the
Countess (not seen), while he cant stand
the idea that she has a date that night with a
local man, Martin (Joshua Marx).
Observing it all from the sidelines while
he does his own drinking is The Old Man
(Randall King). Hes embedded in both
Mays and Eddies imaginations as he some-
times talks to them and relates stories about
them.
Their true story comes to light when
Eddie relates it to Martin while May is out
of the room.
Directed by Kenneth Kelleher, this pro-
duction lacks some of the emotional power
seen in Magic Theatres revival of the play
earlier this year. The play had premiered in
1983 at the San Francisco company while

Bissell, titled The Disaster Artist about
the inept making of the movie framing
the film as a nuttier version of classic
Hollywood tales like Sunset Boulevard.
Franco, himself, reviewed the book, con-
cluding that Wiseau wasnt just a punchline
but was an outlandish version of every fum-
bling aspirant to Hollywood. In so many
ways, Tommy cest moi, wrote Franco.
To be sure, The Disaster Artist, which is
based on Sestero and Bissells book, will
appeal most to fans of The Room. Much
of it plays like a prequel. Our first, immedi-
ately recognizable shot of Tommy (Franco
with a long, jet-black mane) is in silhou-
ette, as if John Wayne is making his
entrance. He and Sestero meet at acting
class, start reading lines together and are
soon headed to Los Angeles to make it big.

Sadies dance

E
very new year after winter break is
formal season for high schools
across the Bay Area, when each
school puts on a winter formal dance. Even
more exciting than the dances, however, is
the tradition of asking a date. Each year, the
proposals become more extravagant, with
posters, balloons and serenades. The boys
complain about the exhausting process of
thinking of the perfect way to ask a girl. So
naturally, they look for-
ward to the year when the
roles are reversed during
the Sadie Hawkins Dance.
Sadie Hawkins is a
nickname for a dance in
which female students
invite male students. This
is contrary to the custom
of male students typically
inviting female students
to school dances. Initially, the dances were a
female-empowering rite at high school and
college campuses, giving women a chance to
stand up and take who they want, instead of
demurely waiting for a man to ask them. The
popularity of the Sadies dances have waned
since the 1950s, but tradition still continues
in some high school culture.
At my school, the Sadies dance is held
every four years. As underclassmen, my girl-
friends looked forward to our senior year,
when we would ask the guys to the formal
dance. However, many were disappointed to
find that this year would not be Sadies. Our
class president explained that Sadies was a
cultural custom and would not be officially
endorsed or supported by the school. When
the class started protesting, she attributed
the change to the new gender equity rules
adopted by all the San Mateo Union High
School District schools.
California Education Code 220 and district
policy require that all educational programs
and activities should be conducted without
discrimination based on actual or perceived
sex, sexual orientation or gender identity and
expression. These rules have caused a great
deal of controversy in the past few years.
The administration has altered campus tradi-
tions to act in accordance with the gender
neutral rules. Our homecoming and prom
king and queen are now called homecoming
and prom royalty to avoid labeling winners

by gender. The traditional Powder-Puff
Bowl, where girls play a football
game and the boys cheer them on, has
been changed to the Homecoming
Bowl, allowing any gender to partici-
pate. The most controversial change
of all was the cap and gown require-
ments at graduation. Last year, the
administration suspended the custom
that girls wear white and boys wear red
and instead required that all students
wear red caps and gowns. Student
opposition was so strong that the
administration had to create time for a
debate assembly in the gym during
lunch, where students came to voice
their opinions and the principal
attempted to answer their questions.
The controversy lasted for months.
Every time the school announces a
change to a tradition, there is an
influx of students who passionately

oppose and petition the administra-
tion. The school always hold their
ground, stating that they were adher-
ing to the new gender neutral policies
and, at the end of every controversy,
the divide between the administration
and students grows deeper.
Now, the Sadies Dance is adding a
new rift to the divide. Students have
been complaining that the administra-
tion is expanding beyond its jurisdic-
tion by sacrificing yet another student
tradition to preserve political correct-
ness.
Personally, I have never understood
the disputes over the new policy. I
find it refreshing that the district is
acknowledging acceptance of noncon-
forming students. Throughout history,
culture and people evolve constantly;
consequently, outdated policies and
laws are replaced by new ones in
accordance to this change. Right now,
the antithesis is happening. The
school policies are progressing, but
the students are holding on to the
past.
I know tradition is a sensitive area,
and many feel violated when district
officials who are out of touch with stu-
dents are deciding the fate of these tra-
ditions. However, I dont think we
should be threatened by change;
instead, I think we should be glad that
we dont have to fight for change as
desperately as generations before us.
In the 1950s, Sadies was the only
time when a girl felt it was socially
acceptable to ask a boy to the dance. It
was a tool for woman-empowerment.
However, in the 21st century, girls
dont need an administrator to desig-
nate when it is OK for them to ask
their own dates. Its unnecessary now,
and thats a good thing. Were not for-
feiting our traditions for the districts
PC language; were evolving toward a
more tolerant and accepting culture. I
think this vision trumps tradition or
customs, so long as we learn to let go
of the old and accept the new.

The problem here is that August gives a one-dimensional,
mostly domineering performance as Eddie, and both he and
Rich as May shout too much in the first scene.
Otherwise, May is a sympathetic character, and both
King as the grizzled Old Man and Marx as the decent but
nave Martin serve the play well.
Running about an hour with no intermission, Fool for
Love moves at a good clip without losing the plots
thread.

bills reductions for many families

479-page bill that no one can absorb

makers needed to study it and get feed-
back from affected groups.
Democrats took to the Senate floor
and social media to mock one page that
included changes scrawled in barely
legible handwriting. Later, they won
enough GOP support to kill a provi-
sion by Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., that
would have bestowed a tax break on
conservative Hillsdale College in
Michigan.
The bill hit rough waters after the
Joint Taxation panel concluded it
would worsen federal shortfalls by $1
trillion over a decade, even when fac-
toring in economic growth that lower
taxes would stimulate. Trump adminis-
tration officials and many Republicans
have insisted the bill would pay for
itself by stimulating the economy. But
the sour projections stiffened resist-
ance from some deficit-averse
Republicans.
But after bargaining that stretched
into Friday, GOP leaders nailed down
the support they needed in a chamber
they control 52-48. Facing unyielding
Democratic opposition, Republicans
could lose no more than two GOP sen-
ators and prevail with a tie-breaking
vote from Vice President Mike Pence,
but ended up not needing it.
Leaders changes included helping
millions of companies whose owners
pay individual, not corporate, taxes on
their profits by allowing deductions of
23 percent, up from 17.4 percent. That
helped win over Wisconsins Johnson
and Steve Daines of Montana.
People would be allowed to deduct up
to $10, 000 in property taxes, a
demand of Sen. Susan Collins of
Maine. That matched a House provi-
sion that chambers leaders included to
keep some GOP votes from high-tax
states like New York, New Jersey and
California.
The changes added nearly $300 bil-
lion to the tax bills costs. To pay for
that, leaders reduced the number of
high-earners who must pay the alterna-
tive minimum tax, rather than com-
pletely erasing it. They also increased
here besides a loose jumble of recre-
ations and allusions to The Room.

Yet as a movie about James Franco,
The Disaster Artist is a smash hit.
Franco populates the film with friends
and comedians, from Jason
Mantzoukas to Seth Rogen (also a
producer). Francos brother, Dave,
stars alongside him as Sestero, mak-
ing the homoerotic bromance between
the characters an outright lark. Its not
a coincidence that the big-name pro-
ducer Tommy awkwardly approaches at
a restaurant (and performs Hamlet
to) is played by Judd Apatow, who
gave Franco his first break on Freaks
and Geeks nearly two decades ago.
The 39-year-old Franco, who has
now directed some 18 movies, has

Corker had been a holdout and has
sharply attacked Trumps capabilities

The bill would abolish the
Obamacare requirement that most
people buy health coverage or face tax
penalties. Industry experts say that
would weaken the law by easing pres-
sure on healthier people to buy cover-
age, and the nonpartisan
Congressional Budget Office has said
the move would push premiums higher
and leave 13 million additional people
uninsured.
Drilling would be allowed in the
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

because it violated Senate budget rules,
would have explicitly let parents buy
tax-advantaged 529 college savings
accounts for fetuses, a step they can
already take but which anti-abortion
forces wanted to inscribe into law.

Trump denies Tillerson out as secretary of state By Matthew Lee

WASHINGTON President Donald Trump
on Friday denied he wants to oust Secretary
of State Rex Tillerson, calling reports to
that effect fake news, as his top diplomat
brushed off speculation that he has lost the
confidence of the White House.
As Tillerson went about his normal sched-
ule of diplomatic activities, including two
meetings with Trump, the president said his
secretary of state is not leaving.
The media has been speculating that I
fired Rex Tillerson or that he would be leav-
ing soon - FAKE NEWS! Trump tweeted.
Hes not leaving and while we disagree on
certain subjects, (I call the final shots) we
work well together and America is highly
respected again!
The tweet was Trumps strongest endorse-
ment of his top diplomat since senior White
House officials on Thursday began telling
reporters that a plan had been devised to

The halfhearted back-
ing amid the swirl of
Donald Trump speculation over
Tillersons imminent
demise had threatened to impair his effec-
tiveness, particularly as he prepares for an
official trip to Europe next week.
On Friday, Tillerson attended two meet-
ings at the White House with Trump one
with Libyas visiting prime minister and
then a lunch with the president and Defense
Secretary James Mattis. Before those meet-
ings, Tillerson told reporters at the State
Department that speculation he was on his
way out was laughable.
Tillerson aides had said the secretary was
sanguine and remained comfortable in his
role despite the turmoil in Trumps national
security team centering on him.
