CourseObjective
Historical evolution of any law helps the students to know the reasons behind the
legislation. In the light of this historical set up it is easy to understand and
interpret the provisions of law. This course aims at giving a brief overview of the
history of Indian law and Constitution of India to enable the students to
understand the laws of India, especially the Constitutional law in a better
manner.
ThiscourseisdesignedtohelpstudentstounderstandthehistoricalbackgroundoftheIndianLegal
System.Thiscourseshallplayapivotalroleincreatinginterestsamongststudentsinfurtheranceof
their law career. The Law commission reports and developments through the British India period
will help students to know the intricacies of Law in India and the establishment of Legal system
duringandpostBritishera.

LearningOutcome
At the completion of the first module students will be able to understand the legal
history of India in a better manner as they are now equiped with the knowledge of
the facts constituting its historical background.
At the completion of the second module students will be able to explain the
Charter if 1726 and enumerate the salient features of the same.
At the completion of the third module students will be able to describe the
Judicial Plans of 1772, 1774 and 1780 and the reforms associated with them.
At the completion of the fourth module students will be able to describe the
provisions of the Regulating Act, 1773 and the establishment of Supreme Courts
at the three Presidency Towns.
At the completion of the fifth module students will be able to will be able discuss
Judicial Plan of 1793 and the reforms associated with it.
At the completion of the sixth module students will be able to discuss the
establishment of High Courts and critically describe the working of Privy Council.
At the completion of the seventh module students will be able to discuss the
Charter Acts of 1833, and 1853 and the reforms associated with it.
At the completion of the last module students will be able to understand the
constitutional developments in India
