Information from Music in Childhood: From Pre-School Through Elementary Grades

Lesson/Activity Summary:
- Introduce students to the word
composer offer simple definition of
what the word composer means
(someone who writes music)
- Inform students that they too are
composers
- Show students what a grown-up
composers music looks like and then
what a kid komposers music looks like
- Sing them the kids komposition
- Distribute paper and writing utensils,
instruct students to draw something similar to the kid komposition youve shown them,
ask students to sing their kompositions
- Next! Did you know that you can bring your composition TO LIFE?!
- Show students how youve created the composition youve drawn with pipe cleaners,
distribute pipe cleaners, and ask students to either re-create their drawn composition
with the pipe cleaners OR make a new composition
- This time when performing compositions, ask for three student volunteers, twist the
ends of the compositions/pipe cleaners together and explain that sometimes pieces
have one composer and sometimes they have more than one, by putting their
compositions together theyve made a composition with one another
- Using our fingers to trace the contour of the composition in the air Ask students to
start on the left and sing the collaborative kid komposition all together.

Variations/Add-ons to the Lesson:

- Grown- up compositions, kid style (see Joy
to the World to the left) showing students these
will expand upon an activity that youve initially
utilized as a creative exercise to teach the concept
of melodic contour, into one where you are
learning familiar tunes
