Committee Meeting Minutes

Date: Tuesday, November 8, 2005 Time: 2:00 to 3:30PM

Place: Room C-4300F, Convention Center, Kansas City, Missouri

1. Introduction of Members and Guests:

Chairman Michael Sprinkel, called the meeting to order at 2:00 PM. The agenda attached
to the minutes was past out. Members introduced themselves and stated their affiliations.
Six members attended the meeting: Milton Anderson, Steve Gebler, Kelly Page, Joe
Solomon, Michael Sprinkel, and Richard Wollmershauser. Five guests attended the
meeting: Scott Anderson, Kurt Borchert, Mark Bosman, Mike Stenko, and Bruce
Strickland.

2. Minutes of the previous meeting in New York City were reviewed. Following a motion
by Joe Solomon and a second by Steve Gebler, the minutes were approved.

3. ACI 503.X Specification for Crack Repair by Epoxy Injection : The revised
document has been returned to ACI for publication.

4. State of the Art Report Crack Injection Using Urethanes: Scott B. Anderson,
Northeast Regional Sales Manager, DeNeef Construction Chemicals Inc. (713-869-0123,
203-233-0061) made a presentation on Crack Injection Using Urethanes. Frank
Constantino arranged for the presentation. The presentation indicated that DeNeef
Construction Chemicals Inc. is the largest and oldest US manufacturer of polyurethane
grouts for the construction industry. Following the presentation the committee decided
that Crack Injection Using Urethanes is not a structural adhesive repair but rather a crack
sealing repair. The committee decided to contact ACI committee 546 Repair and have
them take action on a specification for Crack Injection Using Urethanes. The ICRI Guide
for use of materials for crack injection includes urethanes.

5. ACI 503R-93 Use of Epoxy Compounds with Concrete, Reapproved 1998: After
extending the ballot 30 days, the document was re-approved by a vote of 15 affirmative,
12 not returned and no negatives.

6. Future Technical Sessions: The committee decided not to pursue a session on "Sealing
and Repairing Cracks Using Polymers."

7. Tensile Bond Strength Requirements in Documents: The committee discussed the

bond strength values in the following documents: 503R (175 psi), 503.2, 503.3, and 503.4
(100 psi), 503.6 (250 psi or failure >1/4 inches deep in the substrate), and ICRI Guide for
Surface Preparation. The committee agreed to modify all of the ACI 503 documents that
refer to a bond strength to indicate 250 psi or failure >1/4 inches deep in the substrate.
The documents will be also updated as needed and reballoted. The ASTM C1583-04
Standard Test Method for Tensile Strength of Concrete Surfaces and the Bond Strength or
Tensile Strength of Concrete Repair and Overlay Materials by Direct Tension (Pull-off
Method) has been published and will be used as the reference test procedure for bond
strength.
8. Joint work with other committees: none recommended.

9. Frequently Asked Questions: The committee agreed that the following question is
frequently asked and worthy of consideration as an FAQ: What is the proper application
rate or thickness for epoxy adhesives used to bond plastic concrete to hardened concrete
(ACI 503.2-98)?

10. New Business: none.

11. Other Business: Chairman Sprinkel reminded the committee that the Annual Report will
be done differently starting this year. Two months after the Spring meeting the Chairman
will be asked by ACI staff to update the web page @ concrete.org/committee/503. Also,
members need to keep their information up to date.
