Artifact #1 Diversity Lesson Plan

I. Describe the class: This lesson is intended for an elementary fifth grade class. There are

16 students. Nine of these students are girls and six are boys. There are no disabled

students in this particular class. There are however 4 second language learners. This

lesson is suggested for whole class instruction.

II. Subjects: Social Studies, and English Language Arts

III. Standards:

Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and

information clearly.

Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and

phrases based on grade four or five reading and content, choosing flexibly from a

range of strategies

IV. Objective(s):

(Behavior) The student will be able to construct a Venn diagram of similarities and

differences of the four stories (Group collaboration)

(Degree of accuracy and Audience )The student will be able to describe findings and

convey them in written form, with a minimum 90% accuracy ( Group Poster)

(Condition) Write a short informational report based on the book that was read as a class

( Individual work, except for peer review)

V. The book that I would use for my diversity lesson plan is Snow White Stories From

Around the World: 4 Beloved Tales written by Jessica Gunderson. This is a 32 page book

that would make a person of any age think twice about their cultures tales that theyve

grown up with. Think there is just one fairytale with a beautiful girl and evil stepmother?

Better rethink that! Cultures all around the world have their own Snow White Stories.

This book covers that same tale but from the perspectives of Albania, Germany, Turkey

and Mozambique.

VI. Procedures:

I. Read the book mentioned above as a class.

II. Discuss as a class the similarities and differences of the four stories included in book.

III. Divide students into even groups and have them make a Venn diagram poster of the

four stories.

IV. Give students the option of doing one of two writing prompts:

1. Write a Snow White story set in your neighborhood. Include details that help the

reader identify your community? (Examples: Buildings, parks, people, style of

clothing.) Why can you say that the book we read as a class teaches us to value

cultural diversity?

2. Imagine the four Snow Whites in our book meet each other. Write the

conversation they could possibly have. Why might the way they interact with

each other teach us a lot about cultural diversity?

VII. Materials:
I. Snow White Stories Around the World ( class book)

II. 1 Poster board for each group for comparison Venn diagram

III. Paper to complete rough draft writing prompt

IV. Computer access to complete final typed writing prompt
