E-Portfolio Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) created the Essentials of

Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (2008), a document providing nine

Essentials, a curricular framework that outlines the expected outcomes of graduates of baccalaureate

nursing programs. (AACN, 2008, p. 3) The Essentials includes necessary requirements and

recommendations for the core knowledge required of all healthcare professionals (AACN, 2008, p.

3).This passage will focus on Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health. Upon meeting

Essential VII, the baccalaureate graduate nurse will obtain knowledge and skills in health promotion

and disease prevention at the individual and population level (AACN, 2008, p. 3). For this paper, I will

discuss how my Community Assessment project (Nguyen, 2016) meets the Essential VII -

Clinical Prevention and Population Health.

Exemplar

The piece of work I selected from the LEADERSHIP COURSE is the Congressional Letter (Nguyen,

2017. It is a letter written to a Congressman Cummings, an elected official who is an active member on

the Health Care Reform. The letter focuses on a selected population's health issue with

statistical/scientific support about the issue, and suggestive solutions. The community selected was

Langley Park, Maryland. The community was researched using different research methods including a

windshield survey. Healthy People 2020 was used as a guide for possible health concerns and three

community health concerns were identified and prioritized.

Reflection

This example relates to Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health because the

assignment illustrated I can assess protective and predictive factors which influence the health of

communities, use evidence-based practices to guide health teaching, and using information

technologies in preventative care as mentioned in Essential VII (AACN, Pg. 24, 2008). By addressing
ESSENTIAL VII 3

health related needs I will increase my understanding of population health, which includes the areas of

health, illness, disease, disability, and mortality (AACN, Pg. 23, 2008). This project displays the my

ability to analyze a community and its population data to identify health concerns while making

recommendations and developing an intervention plan.
