numbers, amounts, or items.
1. Standard (s:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.OA.A.3
Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers
using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted.
Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.
Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies
including rounding.

Review the key ideas expressed and explain their own ideas and understanding in light of the
discussion.
3. Objective(s): Students will be able to apply word problems to the CUBES strategy.
4. Materials and Technology Resources: CUBES anchor chart, graphic organizer for
students, and addition/subtraction word problems.
5. Instructional Procedures:
c. Closure: After guided practice, TW ask students how to solve the problem they were working
on.
d. Extension: TW reiterate the importance staying organized and how this problem solving
strategy will give them the tools to do so.
Students will have teachers anchor chart, sentence stems, grid paper to align numbers,
and calculator to check work.
b. Summative After the end of the week they will present their application of CUBES to
a word problem with their teams.

9. Reflection:
a. Strengths: Students are able to circle the number and underline the question.
b. Concerns: Students are having difficulty figuring out what key words to box and why.
c. Insights: This literacy standard provides a logical five step strategy for students to
problem solve word problems. This will give them the tools to be successful in understanding the
task and planning with the end in mind.
