Story Of Ibraheem (A.S.) Axe Effect
Ibraheem (A.S.) decided to do something about his peoples state of
disbelief, but did not reveal it. He knew that there was going to be a
great celebration on the other bank of the river which would be
attended by all the people.
Ibrahim waited until the city was empty, then came out cautiously,
directing his steps towards the temple. The streets leading to it were
empty and the temple itself was deserted, for the priests had also gone
to the festival outside the city.
Ibrahim went there carrying a sharp axe. He looked at the stone and
wood statues of the gods and at the food laid in front of them as
offerings. He approached one of the statues and asked: "The food in
front of you is getting cold. Why dont you eat?" The statue kept silent
and rigid. Ibrahim asked the other statues around him: "Will you not eat
(of the offering before you)?" (Surah 37: Ayah 91)
Story Of Ibraheem (A.S.) Axe Effect
He then raised his axe and started smashing the false gods worshiped by
the people. He destroyed them all except one, on whose neck he hung the
axe. He left the temple.

When the people returned, they were shocked to see their gods smashed
to pieces, lying scattered all over the temple. They began to guess who had
done that to their idols, and Ibrahims name came to their minds.
Allah the Almighty said: "They said: 'Who has done this to our aliah
(gods)? He must indeed be one of the wrongdoers.' They said: 'We heard
a young man talking (against) them who is called Ibrahim.' They said:
'Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may testify.'
They said: 'Are you the one who has done this to our gods, O Ibrahim?
(Ibrahim) said: 'Nay, this one, the biggest of them (idols) did it. Ask
them, if they can speak!'
Story Of Ibraheem (A.S.) Axe Effect
So they turned to themselves and said: 'Verily, you are the Zalimun
(polytheists and wrong-doers).' Then they turned to themselves (their
first thought and said): 'Indeed you (Ibrahim) know well that these
(idols) speak not!' (Ibrahim) said: 'Do you then worship besides Allah,
things that can neither profit you, nor harm you? Fie upon you, and
upon that which you worship besides Allah! Have you then no sense?' "
(Surah 21: Ayaah 59-67)
Furious, they demanded that Ibrahim be arrested and tried. Ibrahim did
not resist.
Anger was burning in their hearts. They decided to throw Ibrahim into
the biggest fire they could build. All the citizens were ordered to gather
wood as a service to their gods. Ignorant, sick women vowed that if they
were cured they would donate so much wood to burn Ibrahim. For
several days they collected fuel.
Story Of Ibraheem (A.S.) - Confidence
They dug a deep pit, filled it with firewood and ignited it. They brought a
catapult with which to cast Ibrahim into the fire. Ibrahim was put on the
catapult, his hands and feet tied. The fire was ready with its flames
reaching the sky. The people stood away from the pit because of the
great heat. Then the chief priest gave his order to cast Ibrahim into the
fire.
The angel Jibraeel (Gabriel) came near Ibraheems head and asked him:
"O Ibraheem, do you wish for anything? Ibraheem replied: "Nothing
from you."
The catapult was shot, and Ibrahim was cast into the fire, but his
descent into the blaze was as a descent on steps in a cool garden. The
flames were still there, but they did not burn, for Allah the Almighty had
issued His command: "O fire! Be you coolness and safety for Ibrahim."
(Surah 21: Ayah 69)
Story Of Ibraheem (A.S.) - Confidence
The crowd, the chiefs, and the priests sat watching the fire from a
distance. It was burning their faces and nearly suffocating them. It kept
burning for such a long time that the disbelievers thought it would never
be extinguished.

When it did burn out, they were greatly amazed to find Ibrahim coming
out of the pit untouched by the fire. Their faces were black from the
smoke, but his was bright with the light and grace of Allah.

The raging fire had become cool for Ibrahim and had only charred the
ropes which held him. He walked out of the fire as if he were walking
out of a garden. Cries of astonishment were heard from the heathens.
"They wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers." (Surah
21: 70)
Story of Taloot &
Jaaloot
Taloot (Saul) had organized his fighting force of willing
men and had gone ahead to do battle, and that as soon as
they were on their way, he put their loyalty to the test.
And when Taloot set out with his troops, he said, Allah
will now put you to the test by a river. He who drinks from
it will not belong to me, but he who does not taste its
water will indeed belong to me, except him who takes a
scoop with his hand. They all drank [their fill] of it, except
for a few of them. (Surah 2 Ayah 249)
He allowed them a single scoop with the hand to quench
their thirst, but most of them drank their fill and were left
behind because they had failed the test. It was better for
the rest of the fighting force as weaklings would have
been a liability on the battlefield.
Taloots forces were to encounter more trials of loyalty
and strength: When he and those who kept faith with
him crossed the river, they said, No strength have we
today to stand up to Jaloot (Goliath) and his forces.
(Surah 2 Ayah 249)

Their numbers had dwindled, and they were aware that

they were outnumbered by Jaloots forces. Would that
invisible force of faith triumph? How strong was their
faith in Allah, and would they be able to harness that
force in their favour and prevail?
At that decisive moment, a small group of true believers
stood up to express their faith: But those of them who
were certain that they would meet their Lord said, How
often has a small host triumphed over a large host by
Allahs grace. Allah is with those who remain patient in
adversity. (Surah 2 Ayah 249)

The srah goes on to confirm that, despite their material

disadvantage, the small, devoted, faithful band of
believers prevailed and overran their formidable enemy:
And when they came face to face with Jaloot and his
troops, they prayed, Our Lord, grant us patience in
adversity, make firm our steps, and grant us victory over
the unbelievers. (Surah 2 Ayah 250)
They routed them, by Allahs will. Dawood (A.S.) slew
Jaloot, and Allah bestowed on him the kingdom and
wisdom, and taught him whatever He willed. (Surah 2
Ayah 251)

At the time of these events, Dawood (A.S.) was a young

man and Jaloot a powerful king and a fearful commander,
but Allah wished to demonstrate to the Israelites that
they should not judge matters at face value, and should
look deeper into the reality of things. Their side of the
bargain was to keep their pact with Allah and prepare
themselves for battle, leaving the rest to Allah who
knows the essence of all things and how they come
about.
The passage is rounded off with a final Ayah: These are
the revelations of Allah. We recite them to you in all
truth, for you are indeed one of Our messengers. (Surah
2 Ayah 252)
These noble revelations emanate directly from Allah,
itself an august fact that deserves mans understanding
and reflection. They convey the truth and outline a
complete code for human life, unrivalled and unmatched
by any other code or system. Any attempts to substitute
Allahs code, or declare it obsolete, are bogus and futile;
Allah alone should be served and obeyed.
