SOLID WASTES and HAZARDOUS WASTES and Environmental Management System

Part I. Write the meaning of the following acronyms: (20 pts)

1. LGU - Local Government unit
2. MMDA - Metropolitan Manila Development Authority
3. 3Rs - Reuse , Reduce Recylce
4. EGF - Environmental Guarantee Fund
5. MRF - Materials Recovery Facility
6. ISO - International standards Organization
7. QMS - Quality Management System
8. EMS - Environmental Management System
9. OSHS - Occupational Safety and Health Standards
10. IMS - Integrated Management system

Part II. Answer the following questions: (10 pts each)

1. Differentiate the terms reuse, recycle and reclaim. Give 2 major benefits of recycling. Give examples for each benefit. Explain what is MRF?

Reuse mainly using the same item for same purpose

Recycle using materials that are waste of the other process
Reclaim- using things for alternative purpose

Benefits of recycling
Reduces waste in the environment
Conserves money for treatment

MRF is facility which involves recycling of materials then sending it to other industries which uses the waste material of the other plants as its raw
materials

2. What are the classification of solid and hazardous wastes? HINT: What is Class A to Class F in RA9003 and RA6969?

a. Household wastes

b. Commercial-industrial

c. Farm and Agriculture

d. Institutional

e. Mining

f. Hazardous Waste

g. Miscellaneous and Specialized Wastes

Residues of sewage treatment plants

Street sweeping debris caused by disasters

Large wastes

Dead animals

Ash from incinerators

Ignitability
Toxicity
Corrosivity

4. What are the 4 paradigm of industrial solid waste management?

Source reduction, recycling and composting, conversion technologies, and landfilling are the 4 paradigm of industrial solid waste.

5. Draw the major components of a sanitary landfill.

6. What are the components of a Hazardous Waste Management Plan? What is a manifesto? What is the function of manifesto in hazardous waste
paradigm?

Components:

7. What are the components of Hazardous Wastes Paradigm? Define and explain the regulatory requirements for each component.

Components:
Waste Generators determines if wastes are hazardous wastes
Regulatory requirements:
o Register as waste generator registration form and issuance of DENR ID
o Prescribed quarterly report form
o Storage and labelling of wastes
o Submit contingency/emergency plan
Waste transporters transports hazardous wastes
Regulatory requirements:
o Registration and accreditation
o Issuance of transport remit
o Uniform hazardous manifest
Waste treaters/recyclers treatment, storage and disposal facilities
Regulatory requirements:
o Secure environmental compliance certificate (ECC)
o Register with EMB
o Submit certificate of treatment
o Submit report to EMB

8. What is Integrated Management System? What 3 basic ISO standards are used to attain this IMS Certification? Explain each standard.

An Integrated Management System (IMS) integrates all of an organizations systems and processes in to one complete framework, enabling an

organization to work as a single unit with unified objectives. Organizations often focus on management systems individually, often in silos and sometimes

even in conflict. A quality team is concerned with the QMS, often an EHS manager handles both Environmental and Health and Safety issues, etc. The

three basic ISO standards for an IMS certification are ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems), and

ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System).

9. What is an Environmental Policy? What are the basic foundation of an Environmental Policy?

An Environmental Policy is a statement by the organization of its intentions and principles in relation to its overall environmental performance which

provides a framework for action and for the setting of its environmental objectives and targets.

10. What is the driving force of Environmental Management System? What is the goal of Environmental Management System?

An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a structured framework for managing an organisation's significant environmental impacts.
The latter vary between organisations, but typically will include waste, emissions, energy use, transport and consumption of materials. Climate
change factors are increasingly prominent as are legacy issues such as contaminated land. Wider factors can also be included, such as impacts on
wildlife (biodiversity) and use of materials (such as embodied water). In implementing an EMS, a company will identify the significant effects relevant
to its business. For maximum effectiveness, an EMS should not be set up as a stand alone system, but built into the exiting management structure

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted
rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
