Creative Output Reflection Paper

1. What indigenous concept did you choose to represent in your creative output? What is your
definition of this concept? The definition can be based on your own reflections or on the readings
assigned in class.

I chose to represent the Filipinos tendency to develop a Jackpot Mentality. I believe that this is
the “get rich quick” mentality of some Filipinos who would rather try and engage in easier ways
of acquiring money such as getting in the lottery, joining raffle draws, participating in the “get
rich quick” schemes that we find on the internet and the like, instead of committing themselves
and earning through hard work, patience and sacrifice.

2. What is the core/central message that you wanted to communicate with your audience, as
represented in your project?

The message of my project is simple and straightforward. I want to convey that, although there
isn’t anything wrong with spending some money for chances in the lottery as getting the chance
to win a huge amount of money for some change is undeniably very tempting, those people who
go through the extremes, the ones who rely too much on fate and luck, and spend all their
money on get rich quick schemes (mostly lottery related) will mostly end up with lost money and
wasted time. These people, my target audience, are those who are almost 100% seduced by this
concept and sometimes never realize or think that the amount of money that they spend on
these are actually wasted.

a. What do the images/symbols/representations in your project mean? Why did you choose
these elements to represent your concept? Explain the elements found in your creative
output. Help us, your audience, understand your project. Give us a preview of your process in
the creation of this project

I decided to draw an editorial cartoon of the jackpot mentality. I sketched a jackpot with lottery
tickets for hair posing and admiring itself in the mirror. I wanted to show that the lottery or
anything involving these ‘get-rich quick’ schemes are very seductive and pretty however if you
look closely, reflected behind the jackpot, you’ll be able to see that the jackpot is actually
cracked/has a sizable hole at the back and the coins that fall into the jackpot actually fallout
from the back. This makes the jackpot not only useless as it can’t hold money or simple change
but also shows that the money that does fall out only lands into big corporations pockets/piggy
banks. I also wanted this to mean that whatever money that you put into lottery tickets or
jackpots will just get lost and/or wasted. I explicitly placed the hole in the back of the jackpot to
show that most people with this mentality never really notice or see how much money and time
they lose on these things because they are too focused on the big and seductive prize that the
lottery can bring.

3. Anything else that you’d like to say to your audience regarding your creative output?
