About this book
This book provides a fun and engaging way
for beginners to learn Arabic. On most of the
pages, large, colorful panoramic scenes are
surrounded with small pictures labeled with
their names in Arabic.

Saying the words

Each Arabic word is also written in Roman
letters, to show you how to pronounce it.

Reading the words while looking at the pictures

will help you remember them, and you can

test yourself by looking for and naming the

objects in the panoramic scenes. You can
even practice forming simple sentences to
talk about the pictures.

Arabic alphabet
At the back of the book there is a guide to
the Arabic alphabet and a list of all the Arabic
words with their pronunciation guides and
meanings in English. Arabic is written from
and there are several sounds for
right to left
which there are no equivalents in English. The
pronunciation guides wilt help you, but the
best way to learn how to say the words is

to listen to a native Arabic speaker.

Arabic alphabet and. word list

In the list on the opposite page you will find all the words in this book in the alphabetical order of the English
words. Next to each English word is the number of the page on which it appears, and the Arabic for that word
written in Roman letters to show you how to pronounce it. The Arabic words written in Arabic letters are
shown on the right. Remember, Arabic is read from right to left.

There are twenty-eight letters in the Arabic alphabet. These are mostly consonants as the vowel sounds (e.g. V
or ‘u’) are shown by signs called harakat above or below the letters.
Here are the harakat for the vowel sounds:
^ fatha (a short line above the word) This gives an a’ sound pronounced as in 'sun
1 damma This gives the V
sound pronounced as in ‘soot’.
kasra (a short line below the word) This gives the ‘i’ sound pronounced as in ‘sit’.

There are two other harakat,

sukoon to show there is no vowel sound
shadda for stressing the letter sound
