Linear System Theory ⟹ Assignment # 3

1) Given the transfer function 𝐺𝐺(𝑠𝑠) = 𝑏𝑏/(𝑠𝑠 2 + 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 + 𝑏𝑏).

a) Evaluate percent overshoot (% 𝑂𝑂. 𝑆𝑆), settling time (𝑇𝑇𝑠𝑠 ) and peak time (𝑇𝑇𝑝𝑝 )for the following values: 𝑎𝑎 = 4, 𝑏𝑏 = 25.
Also, write down the observations.
b) Calculate the values of 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑏𝑏 so that the imaginary part of the poles remains the same, but the real part is increased
2times over that of (a) and then evaluate % 𝑂𝑂. 𝑆𝑆,𝑇𝑇𝑠𝑠 ,𝑇𝑇𝑝𝑝 . Also, write down the observations.
c) Calculate the values of 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑏𝑏 so that the imaginary part of the poles remains the same, but the real part is
decreased ¼tune over that of (a) and then evaluate % 𝑂𝑂. 𝑆𝑆 ,𝑇𝑇𝑠𝑠 ,𝑇𝑇𝑝𝑝 .Also, write down the observations.
d) Calculate the values of 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑏𝑏 so that the real part of the poles remains the same, but the imaginary part is increased
2 times over that of (a) and then evaluate % 𝑂𝑂. 𝑆𝑆 ,𝑇𝑇𝑠𝑠 ,𝑇𝑇𝑝𝑝 .Also, write down the observations.
e) Calculate the values of 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑏𝑏 so that the real part of the poles remains the same, but the imaginary part is increased
4 times over that of (a) and then evaluate % 𝑂𝑂. 𝑆𝑆 ,𝑇𝑇𝑠𝑠 ,𝑇𝑇𝑝𝑝 .Also, write down the observations.
f) Calculate the values of 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑏𝑏 so that the damping ratio remains the same, but the natural frequency is increased 2
times over that of (a) and then evaluate % 𝑂𝑂. 𝑆𝑆 ,𝑇𝑇𝑠𝑠 ,𝑇𝑇𝑝𝑝 .Also, write down the observations.
g) Calculate the values of 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑏𝑏 so that the damping ratio remains the same, but the natural frequency is increased 4
