A DIRECTIONAL PROTECTION SCHEME FOR HVDC

TRANSMISSION LINES BASED ON REACTIVE ENERGY

High Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC) is gaining worldwide popularity in recent years. So the
HVDC transmission line protection is becoming increasingly desirable with this
advancement. This seminar proposes a transmission line backup protection scheme based on
the integral of reactive power for HVDC systems. This paper proposes a novel directional
backup protection scheme based on reactive energy for HVDC transmission systems. Under
normal operating situations, the reactive power flow on the dc line is nearly zero except for
some small harmonic components. When a line fault occurs, the voltage and current at the
terminals of the DC line will contain a transient component, thus resulting in significant
reactive power flows on the DC line. The proposed protection scheme can correctly
distinguishes the faults under all test conditions, including internal faults, external faults, load
variations, and fault distance variations.

IMPROVED DIFFERENTIAL CURRENT PROTECTION SCHEME

FOR CSC-HVDC TRANSMISSION LINES
AKHIL G AUGUSTINE

M170392EE

High Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC) is gaining worldwide popularity in recent years. In the
modern power system, current source converted high-voltage direct current (CSC-HVDC)
system is playing an important role due to the advantages such as flexible control,
asynchronous interconnection, and long distance transmission. However, the conventional
differential current protection has shortages in operation speed and fault identification. This
study proposes a novel differential current protection scheme, which is composed of the
differential current unit and blocking unit. With this technique we can accurately distinguish
between the internal and external fault, without the influence of fault location or fault
resistance. The proposed scheme can be easily into the real HVDC control and protect
system.
