3. Writing instructions

Turn to page 48 in your Book. Do task 6. You will find the answers at the end of this Unit.

Task 7 on page 49 is a group work but you will have to do it individually. First, complete the
questionnaire and then try to explain how to perform each of these actions.

In previous task you explained how some actions are performed. Actually, you gave instructions
how to do something. We hope you remember writing instructions for opening computer (Module
IV, Unit 8, your Book page 15).

- Chronological order is used for something as simple as a recipe and for something as
complex as a history book. It is used in business, science, and engineering to explain
processes and procedures. For example, chronological order would be used to explain how
to take a photograph, how to perform a chemistry experiment, or how to set up an
accounting system. Such paragraph are called “how to” or “process” paragraphs.

- Transition signals are especially important in a chronological paragraph. You have to be


very clear about the sequence of events: Did one event happen before, at the same time
as, or after another event?

Chronological transition signals include the following:

Read task 8 in your Book, page 49 and then do it.

1 Right-click on the Desktop to open up the context sensitive menu. Choose ‘New’ on the
menu. Choose ‘Folder’ on the submenu.

3 Click on he Start button. Choose ‘Shut down’ from the start menu. Select ‘Shut down the
computer?’ in the dialogue box. Click the ‘Yes’ button.

4 Double-click on the volume-control icon in the system tray. Drag the volume slide up or
down to the required volume setting.

5 Right-click on the desktop to open up the context sensitive menu. Choose ‘Arrange Icons’
from the menu. Click on the desired format in the submenu.

6 Allow the mouse pointer to hover over the time icon in the system tray. After the short
delay the date will be displayed above the time.

7 Allow the mouse pointer to hover over an icon.
