TIONESTA, Pa. — Robert M. “Bob” Carringer of Tionesta, died late Sunday evening, Aug. 9, 2009. He
was 86.

Mr. Carringer was born Nov. 29, 1922, in Oil City, Pa., a son of Marion A. and June Herman
Carringer.

He graduated from Tionesta High School in 1940 and attended Carson Long Military Institute,
Bucknell University, Carnegie Tech, and Eastern Washington State College.

A World War II and Vietnam veteran, Bob served his country in the U.S. Air Force for nearly 30 years,
retiring in 1976. He flew 50 combat missions as a B-24 navigator in the European theater in World
War II from a base in southern Italy; was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict; and
served in a B-52 wing during the Vietnam conflict in Southeast Asia.

His career in the Air Force allowed him to reside in Libya, England, Thailand, California, Maine,
Washington, Alaska and Delaware. Highlights of his military career included commanding a
Strategic Air Command missile site during the Cuban Missile Crisis and an assignment with the 9th
Air Force at Beale Air Force Base in California, where he participated in the prestigious SR-71
program.

A er he retired from the Air Force, Bob returned to Tionesta where he commenced a second career
in real estate, timber and natural gas.

He attended Tionesta United Methodist Church and previously served as chairman of the Forest
County Republican Party and chairman of the Tionesta Area Chamber of Commerce.

He was a 32nd degree Free and Accepted Mason; and belonged to Zem Zem Shrine, Veterans of
Foreign Wars, American Legion, Forest County Historical Society and the Sara Bovard Memorial
Library.

He was a descendant of Revolutionary War patriots, Martin Carringer, Rudolph Spengler and Peter
Grove.

He is survived by: his wife, the former Katheryn Kiser Fitzgerald, whom he married Jan. 11, 1997, in
Hermitage; a son, Rob Carringer and his wife Susan, Plano, Texas; three daughters, Marion
Sherwood and her husband Stephen, Endeavor, Pa.; Christine Carringer, Fairfield, Calif.; and
Randa Cody and her husband David, Sacramento, Calif.; nine grandchildren, a great-grandson;

and two sisters, Rachel Hauth, Tionesta; and Dorothy Smith and her husband Donald, Wexford,
Pa.

He also leaves: a stepson, Mike Fitzgerald and his wife Cheryl, Hermitage; three stepdaughters,
Karen Groce and her husband Herb, Hollidaysburg, Pa.; Marilyn Deiger and her husband Gary,
Hermitage; and Patti Leipheimer and her husband Jack, Greenville; nine stepgrandchildren, seven
stepgreat-grandchildren; a special stepniece, Chris Rog, Tionesta; and several other nieces and
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Janet Adams Carringer, who died in 1995;
and a brother, Henry Carringer, in 1925.

His children will always be grateful for the gi he gave of opening up the world to them and for
encouraging them to follow their dreams.

His stepfamily welcomed Bob into their lives with love and embraced him during the years they
were blessed to know him.

The family is in appreciation of all the love and compassion that the caregivers offered to Bob and
the family.
