Question interview mathematics

1. What do you know about mathematics?

I know quite a lot about mathematics. There are a lot of topics that are all mathematics.
It's not just algebra and geometry. Other topics, for example, are statistics, number
theory and cryptology. But there's still a lot more.

2. Do you ever think about how mathematics can affect your daily life?

I’m aware that mathematics is everywhere around is. Computers and machines are
based on mathematics. Even our phones can’t work properly without mathematics.
But also shapes and patterns in nature, even our human body, it all contains
mathematical ratios like the golden ratio for example.

3. How do you think mathematics affects your daily life?

Without mathematics we wouldn’t have computers, not having them would deeply
affect our lives.

4. Do you know anything from mathematics that affects your daily life?

Yes, I have a lot of examples. Computers, phones, online banking, etc.

5. Is there a difference between mathematics nowadays and in the early days?

The mathematics itself doesn’t change. The Pythagorean Theorem will never change.
However, the kind of mathematics that we’re using is changing. A thousand years ago,
people needed maths to solve other problems than we have nowadays. The ancient
Greek, for example, did a lot of geometry. Nowadays we don’t need that many
geometry anymore.
In the golden era, calculating things became more and more important. Doing business
meant that people also needed methods for calculating profits. When the industry was
developing, other mathematical topics were developed. So each era has its
characteristic maths.
In the past century, computers completely changed the kind of mathematics that people
are interested in today. Computers also fastened some mathematical discoveries.
Internet security is the reason that people nowadays are interested in prime numbers
and developing/inventing new mathematics to make new security systems.

6. What do you think mathematics is all about?

It’s about all the topics that I described before. It’s present in architecture, but also in
finance, nature, arts.
7. At how many things do you think mathematics has an influence on?

It doesn’t influence everything, but it is present in almost everything. It’s omnipresent.

8. Do you think mathematics also has an influence on nature?

It doesn’t influence nature, but nature contains mathematical patterns.

9. Why do you think mathematics is also in nature?

The Fibonacci sequence, for example, is present in shells and sunflowers.
