18.1 DEFINITION

INFORMED CONSENT – Obtaining permission for treatment, diagnostic


procedure, surgery by giving patients full information regarding all therapeutic and
diagnostic procedures.

18.2 OBJECTIVE
1. For legal purpose.
2. To involve patient in health care decisions related to hisconditions.

18.3 POLICY

1. The patient has the right to receive from his Attending Physician information
necessary to be able to give consent prior to the start of treatment , restraints
or any surgical procedure. The informed consent shall include but not
limited to:
a. Nature of the treatment
b. The risk
c. Complications
d. Expected outcome or benefit and effects of treatment.
e. Alternative forms of treatment other than the scientific method in
medicine or surgery.
2. It is the physician’s responsibility to communicate and inform the patient
about the operative procedures.
3. Consent is necessary for all surgical procedures to be carried out on the
patient.

PROCEDURE

1. The surgical procedure must be written on the consent form exactly as


ordered in the pre-operative order. A patient must sign consent prior to
admission to the hospital in order to carry out the other procedures or
treatment of the patient.
2. Abbreviations or misspelled words are not acceptable.
3. The consent form should include the surgeon’s full nameand assistant if
indicated.

4. In case the patient is under 18 years of age, the guardian or family members
will be the one who will sign the consent.
5. If the patient is unable to read, the doctor or a witness must stand. The In-
charge-officer in Emergency Department will sign the consent if life saving
measures prior to admission.
6. The consent must be witness and signed by two people in accordance with the
customs and law of the Kingdom. The husband will decide for his wife and
children.
7. The consent must never be obtained under duress and coercion. If any
doubts, confusion concerning the surgery, nature of treatment, benefits and
risk, or lack of understanding to make decision , the consent should not be
signed and the surgeon must be notified at once.
8. The consent is valid until such time as there is a change in circumstaces
affecting the nature of surgery or risk or any alternative my arise but no
longer than 30 days.
9. Consent can be revoked either verbally or in writing at anytime. if the
patient has been discharge between the time of the consent was signed and
the time the surgical procedure to be performed, a new consent should be
obtained.
