SCEB: Session 10

The class started with a video clip by Shell corporation about the various initiatives taken globally
to provide clean energy access to everyone. Some of the initiatives include capturing solar and
hydrogen energy, gravity light, etc., which have been proved to be very efficient alternative forms
of energy and how countries and organizations all over the world should orient their goals for a
better and secure earth in future.

The class then shifted its focus to the various languages existing in India and how they have
evolved through the times along with others. We saw that as we step outside our state-identified
language boundary, we realize there are tons of different languages which do not or had not find
space in this world. Many of the practices, studies, sciences, literatures, mathematics that the
language incorporated disappear along with the extinct of their culture. This is the fundamental
reason behind the start of the ‘genocide’ or mass killing of something. We related this through
the reflection on the book “Lords of the Global Village” by the single mythological story of the
Asuras or “demons”. The book also provides instances about the Spanish population who could
not tolerate another culture more superior than their own culture which shows their adherence
and entitlement for their own culture.

The class then discussed on what it takes to be a professional and what is the difference between
a professional and a non-professional. We saw what are the consequences when a profession is
challenged by an institutional ideology. Professionals extend the application of the ideologies
learned through course curriculum into a new situation and context. Examples are teachers who
act as professionals by not taking sides nor behave politically while bringing out certain
curriculum.

The final episode of the class focused on a video clip “The Story of Solutions” where we saw the
difference between an “Old Game Solution” and a “Game Changing Solution”. We always have
this ideology of getting better and better, sometimes just by mere numbers, in terms of more is
better, which actually is the wrong way. While the Old Game Solution incentivizes people to bring
back their waste, this doesn’t actually work because the core problem of waste generation isn’t
addressed. While the Game Changing Solution helps address the core problem by joining hands
with citizens, organizations and government and making people more aware of the various ways
in which they can help build a better place. The game changing approach is more of a bottom up
approach which depends on the collaboration and cooperation and instead of emphasizing on
“more” growth the goal should be of “better” growth.
