INTRODUCTION

In the past, the concept of sexual harassment in the workplace was virtually
unknown in the Philippines. This lack of awareness was due mainly to the dearth
of information on the subject. Sexual harassment has been increasing recognized
as an inappropriate, unacceptable, and offensive behavior which not only affects
the target individual but the work environment as well.

The growing recognition and awareness of sexual harassment at work may be

attributed to several factors. First, the influence of literature and information
from industrialized countries. In these countries, sexual harassment at work has
been recognized as a problem and has occupied a central place in the priorities of
various social movements, such as those advocating women’s rights and human
rights. In addition, some employers and governments have adopted policies and
measures aimed at combating work related sexual harassment.

Second, influenced by foreign literature and thinking on the subject,

advocates of women’s rights in the Philippines have slowly brought the issue out
in the open, have made the existence of the problem known, and has drawn
attention to it. Third, incidents of sexual harassment have increasingly elevated
to the union level for a more institutional form of intervention. This level of
awareness in the Philippines has led to a recognition of sexual harassment at
work as an emerging labor problem requiring urgent attention. While, much
remains due to be done to address this problem, a big achievement has been that
of ensuring that the problem is known and confronted.

The main purpose of this study is to make people, whether young or old,
experienced or inexperienced, new or old to have a better understanding of this
issue so that they will be able to combat it effectively if ever they are found in a
difficult situation. It will also aiming to show the reasons, how and why sexual
harassment occurs. It will investigate the possible consequences and solutions
available to combat this issue. It is true that sexual harassment will not halt by
simply ignoring it. On the contrary, this ignorance will encourage harassers to
continue and even excel in their wrongdoing. It will even try to highlight the fact
that when sexual harassment occurs, it is the duty of the employer to protect and
support the victims. Furthermore, the purpose of this study is to highlight the fact
that companies need to have disciplinary measures which will help in reducing
sexual harassment and avoid future incidents of this nature in the work place.
Discipline should act as a catalyst in the prevention and gradual elimination of
sexual harassment. It should be clear to workers that this type of unethical
behaviour will not be tolerated at work.

This paper will discuss the cases of sexual harassment in the workplace. In
this section, sexual harassment will be first defined. Moreover, emphasis will be
laid on the main issue of this research, that is, the effects of sexual harassment at
work. Finally, it will examine how and why harassment occurs and the possible
solutions to combat this issue at the workplace. We are targeting better
understanding on how to provide a holistic perspective to sexual harassment.
