GRID ISLANDING REPORT

 On dated 25/02/07 at 04:30 PM all the TG’s at CPP – 1,2 & 3 running normal. TG – 6
was running at 38 MW normally. Geb Line – 1,2 & Tie Line remain in service.
 Suddenly at 04:30:25 Sec. we observed that Grid frequency rises from 49.03 Hz to 51.45
Hz. At the same time Generation of the entire Generator also reduced as per given below
suddenly. All other parameters like Voltage, Power factor, Reactive Power, Current and
Exciter current are also vary proportionally.

a) TG – 1 20.2 MW 14 MW
b) TG – 2 10.0 MW 8.2 MW
c) TG – 3 2.5 MW 3.3 MW
d) TG – 4 12.4 MW 14.3 MW
e) TG – 5 23.0 MW 15 MW
f) TG – 6 38 MW 18 MW

 Total generation was around 105 MW before this phenomenon occurred and after that
generation was reduced to 75 MW approximately. Remaining load was drawn from GEB
Line -2.
 On GIS panel following Tripping and annunciation observed at CPP -3.
a) Rate of change of frequency with respect to time + over frequency
b) GIS Relay operated

Other tripping registered in MICOM Relay is as under :

i. F > 1 TRIP ON 16:32:11:924 Over Frequency stage 1

ii. F > 2 TRIP ON 16:33:50:623 Over Frequency stage 2
iii. F < 1 TRIP ON 16:43:13:121 Under Frequency stage 1
iv. F < 3 TRIP ON 16:43:13:121 Reverse Power with Under Frequency

And hence GIS Relay operated at 16:31:00 and Line – 1 Breaker tripped through GIS.
GIS relay at Line – 2 was not operated and we are connected with Grid through Line – 2.

 Generator was running on 18 MW after islanding and to meet the load demand of CPP –
3. We are drawing power of 22 MW from GEB Line – 2 through Tie Line.
 After reset all the tripping & annunciation we have again synchronized the Line – 1 at
04:42 PM and then TG – 6 Generation increased from 18 MW to 35 MW again. After
synchronizing with the Grid we have observed a very large variation of the Frequency
from 48.33 Hz to 50.15 Hz.
 We came to know from the GEB people there was a problem in the Western Grid and two
nos. of 220 KV line from Dahej substation to GACL was also tripped.
 At 17:30 PM found that all the parameters of 220 KV grids become normal. Frequency
variation also reduced.
 During this phenomenon, our CU – 1,2 & 3 plant was not affected.
