HEAT EXCHANGERS IN SOUR SERVICES Page 3 of 6

Rev-2 Oct-14

A SCOPE
This specification covers additional requirements for carbon steel pressure vessels and heat
exchangers when 'sour' service conditions are specified. Sour service is defined as a wet
process stream generally containing greater than 50ppm H 2S.

These requirements supplement those in specifications 'EES-C-210 Unfired Pressure Vessels'

and 'EES-E-120 Shell and Tube Heater Exchangers'. When the requirements of this
specification exceed those of 'EES-C-210' and 'EES-E-120', the requirements of this
specification shall rule.

Severe sour service, i.e. wet process streams containing over 1,000ppm H 2S or 500 ppm H2S
and 20ppm cyanide, is not covered by this specification. A special Project Specification shall
be developed by the Contractor, in conjunction with the Owner, for material selection under
these conditions.

For minimum design metal temperatures between -10°C and -46°C, the requirements of 'EES-
C-132 Carbon Steel Pressure Vessels and Heat Exchangers for Low Temperature Operation'
shall also apply.

USE OF BULLETS
Bullets against paragraphs are used to highlight the following specific instructions.

An item referenced within the paragraph appears on a Purchaser’s form or attached layout
drawing.

The Purchaser is required to make a decision or provide supplemental information. This will
either be contained in the supplied data sheet, or in the Purchaser’s requisition.

A specific item requires the Purchaser’s approval in writing.

1.0 MATERIALS

Pressure-containing components for sour service shall strictly conform to NACE MR0103 and
normally be fabricated from materials to ASTM A516 Grade 60, 70, A105, A350 LF2 or A106
Grade B, with the following modifications:

(i) The maximum tensile strength as supplied and tested shall not exceed 655MPa
(95,000psi).

(ii) Material shall be vacuum degassed and normalised with the following chemistry
requirements:
C 0.20% max
Mn 1.20% max
P 0.02% max
S 0.005% max
Nb 0.02% max
V 0.02% max

(iii) Boron or Titanium shall not be added intentionally. All materials shall meet ASTM A20
supplemental requirements S20 and S21. The maximum CE value required by S20
shall be 0.45.

(iv) Plate material (pressure parts) shall be UT examined per ASTM A578 acceptance Level
1.

(v) Material Test Certificates (as defined in 'EES-A-150 Basic Requirements for
Submission of Bids and Execution of Contracts for Major Equipment') shall be
supplied for all pressure parts. Certificates of compliance are not acceptable.

Any conflict in material specification between NACE MR 0103 and this standard, the more
stringent requirement shall govern.

2.0 FABRICATION

(i) Welding shall be performed in accordance with 'EES-B-910 General Welding

Requirements'. Owner requires that the weld procedure qualification record shall show
a hardness traverse across the base metal, HAZ and weld metal with a maximum
hardness of HV10 235.

(ii) Preheat is required for all welding. A minimum preheat of 93°C is required for
components <50mm thick and a minimum of 149°C for components >50mm thick.

(iii) Welding inspection and testing shall be in accordance with 'EES-B-910’.

(iv) The entire vessel or exchanger (except bundle) shall be postweld heat treated in
accordance with 'EES-B-910' at 635°C +/- 14°C for 1 hour per 25mm thickness with a
minimum duration of 2 hours.

(v) The maximum production weld hardness permitted after postweld treatment is 200HB.

(vi) No welding is permitted on equipment after post-weld heat treatment. Owner’s

permission is required before commencement of any repairs or modifications to
PWHT’s equipment. Generally full preheat treatment will be required after a
modification or repair.

(vii) All internal welds shall be blend ground per 'SD-C-99664 Weld Blending for Pressure
Vessels.' At the discretion of the Owner, automatic submerged arc welds may be
exempted from this requirement.
