Standards
LAFS.3.RL.1.3 Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and
explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.
LAFS.3.W.2.5 With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing
as needed by planning, revising, and editing.
LAFS.3.W.3.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital
sources; take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.

 Clear and concise language for directions
 Pictures included next to the activity directions
 Students are encouraged to work in pairs or as a group
 Symbols included next to key words on the story sort cards

Sailing into stories:
 Story sort cards
 Container /bowl
 Velcro
Fishing for a Character:
 Fishing game
 Container/bowl
 Character trait list
 Pirate cutout
 Velcro
Mapping the Adventure:
 My Story Map
 Sheet protector
 Dry erase marker
 Picture cards
 Loose leaf paper
 pencil

Student Directions
Sailing into Stories:
1. Pick up a card.
2. Read the card carefully.
3. Put the card under the category it belongs.
4. Keep sorting the cards until they are all on the board.
Fishing for a Character:
1. Grab a fishing rod.
2. Use the fishing rod to “fish” up to 6 fishes.
3. Remove the character trait attached to each fish.
4. Put the character traits on the pirate’s face.
5. Think about your character and talk to a partner about him/her.
a. Where does your character live?
b. What does your character like to do?
c. What does your character dislike to do?
Mapping the Adventure:
1. Pick a card.
2. Look at the card closely.
3. Grab a marker and fill out the story map for the picture.
4. When you finish, copy the information onto your own paper.
5. Erase the words on the map.
6. Pick another card and “map” it out.
