(increases longitude) in the east. A study of the signs, asterisms and planets
(including their motions) with reference to the lagna divulges all information and
the fortunes of the native.

1.1 Movement of the planets

In the solar system, the Sun is stationary at the centre and the planets are
revolving around it in elliptical orbits. Their speed is uniform in that they are
sweeping equal areas in equal time spans (Kepler’s law). All planets travel in the
anti-clockwise direction when viewed from the northern celestial hemisphere.
However, for studying life on earth, this heliocentric view is not considered and
instead, a geocentric view of the sky is used.
Figure 1: Geocentric view (pole star)

1.2 Apparent motion

Due to the elliptical orbit as well as due to the apparent retrogression, the
planets have varying speeds (angular longitudinal motion) called ‘gati’ or gait. They
appear to be moving fast (cara) or very fast (até-cara). At times they are stationary
(sthira) for a very short duration just before they change the direction of motion.
They appear to retrogradation (vakra) when away from the Sun. The average motion
is given below.
Table 1: Average motion of planets

Saturn 002’ 002’ 120/year
Rähu/Ketu 003’11” 19022’/year 003’ 200/year

1.3 Latitudinal motion

Besides the longitudinal motion, the planets also have latitudinal motion i.e.
they appear to be moving in a north- south direction with reference to the earth’s
ecliptic (horizontal plane that passes through the center of the earth and Sun). This is
called kränti or declination. Although this does not show up in the two-dimensional
chart of the heavens, it is noted separately and is used in political astrology and
other purposes.

1.4 Nodes
The lunar orbital plane is tilted by 50 9’ to the earths ecliptic. This causes the
Moon to have a latitudinal motion as well. The points of intersection of the lunar
orbit with the earth ecliptic are called the ascending node (Rähu) and descending
node (Ketu) because the Moon either gains or loses latitude after these nodal
conjunctions respectively.
Similarly, all other planets from Mercury to Saturn also have their orbits tilted
to the earth ecliptic and have latitudinal motion. Their points of orbital intersection
with the earth ecliptic are also called nodes of the planets. Thus each planet has its
own set of Rähu-Ketu. However, in Vedic astrology we are only concerned with the
nodes of the Moon. Although the true nodes have some direct and some
retrogradation motion, only the average motion called ‘mean nodes’ (which is
always in retrogradation) is used in Vedic astrology.

their inherent nature. The Sun, Saturn, Mars, weak Moon, Rähu & Ketu are evil
planets. Venus, Jupiter, Mercury and Moon are good planets. Mercury is classified
as an evil planet if it conjoins evil planets; else it is a good planet. Mercury, when
conjoined more good planets or when placed alone in a sign is considered a good
planet.
The strength of the Moon is based on the moonlight. The Moon should have
more than half-light to be considered strong. In general, astrologers accept that the

Sun. The word ätmä has various meanings which focus on the self. The moon
signifies the mana (mind) in its five levels of consciousness: -

1. Physical Consciousness: The physical existence of the individual and

consciousness of the physical existence of the existence of all other bodies and
relationships with these bodies.
2. Mental Consciousness: Knowledge of material and other things that influence
the mental makeup and create various desires. The important aspects are (a)
luxuries, vehicles and other things that enable a more comfortable life, (b)
religious and spiritual knowledge and aspirations and (c) Education and
higher learning.
3. Sub-conscious: The peculiar mental makeup of the individual that filters the
information and works in the background. This is the (a) inner strength,
weakness or ability and (b) the ability to resist evil or negative forces.
4. Super Conscious: The mana (mind) of the individual is linked intricately to
the minds of the ancestors as is seen in the genetic make up of the individual.
It carries the karma of past existence and benefits from or suffers due to the
good and bad karma of the forefathers/ancestors. Ingeneral the two areas are
the patrilineal karma and the matrilineal karma.
5. Supra Consciousness: Varähamihira states ‘ätmä sahaiti manasä mana indriyeëa
svärthena cendriyamiti krama eña çéghraù |yogo'yameva manasaù kimagamyamasti
yasmin mano vrajati tatra gato'yamätmä ||B.S. 75-3. The ätmä (soul) merges with
the mana (mind); the mana merges with the indréyas (senses) and the senses
with their respective organs in rapid succession. This entire merger is
instantaneous. With such a (strong and intimate) bond is there anything
unattainable by the mind? Besides, wherever the mind goes, the soul shall
follow.’
The ätmä is the master of the chariot and the mana is the reigns. The intellect
is the charioteer and the horses are the indréyas (senses and their organs). The
objects are the goal. Our view is that the number of horses attached to the
chariots of the various planetary deities indicates the number of fully
developed senses and sense organs that the animals represented by them
possess. For example, the Sun symbolizing birds, has seven horses and this
could mean seven fully developed sense/organs. The Moon symbolizes the
human being and has the ten horses to its chariot indicating that man is the
only animal which has all ten senses/organs fully developed.
There was a debate as to whether the ätmä separates from the mana at some
stage after death and many astrologers felt that this does not happen, else
how could the person remember his past incarnation. Our view is based on
the above teachings of Varähamihira and other Vedic seers and we believe
Båhat Paräsara horä çästra: Graha guëa svarüpa adhyäya Page 6 of 15

that the ätmä is separated from the mana and the senses/organs as a part of
the process of death. This is the greatest gift of Maheçvara. How else could the
ätmä and mana reunite during the birth process (as explained by
Varähamihira above) if they were not separated beforehand? Secondly,
memory is a function of the ‘dhé’ (intellect) and not the mana (mind).
Thus, Supra consciousness refers to the fact that the mana is directed on a
path of worldly experiences based on karma of the individual in the past
incarnations that could neither be suffered nor forgiven called prarabdha dåòha
karma.

respectively. Mercury signifies the prince (heir apparent). Mars signifies the
commander-in-chief of the armed forces and other such leaders6. The minister and
secretaries are signified by Jupiter and Venus respectively. Saturn is the servant
(labor). Rähu and Ketu represent the army.
In the modern nation-state context, Sun represents the head of the state and
such top political heads that are the final authority and represent the government.
The Moon represents the bureaucratic heads and top administrators that carry out
the work of the government and also provide sustenance or continuity between
successive governments. Due to a bifurcation between internal and external security
functions, the internal security and police is ruled by Mars and indicates all those
involved in the maintenance of law and order. Mercury signifies the aspiring
political leaders vying for the position of the head of the state and such leaders in
parliament. Jupiter signifies advisers and ministers that are politically appointed as
Jupiter is the adviser to the Sun. Venus represents advisers in the bureaucracy and
lower level bureaucrats themselves as Venus is the adviser to the Moon. Rähu and
Ketu represent the armed forces and signify people on the border. Rähu signifies
those that have to go to foreign lands or beyond the border like the secret service
agents (espionage). Ketu signifies those protecting the border from within and is the
regular army (including navy, air force etc.) Kalyäëaverma (Särävali) opines that the
native acquires the qualities and abilities of the strongest of the planets.

Mars indicates a celibate male and represents boys till marriage whereas
Saturn signifies girls after puberty but before marriage. Mercury signifies little girls
before puberty. The adult male is signified by Jupiter while the female is signified by
Venus. These planets indicate the period when the people marry and procreate. In
the middle age, the Sun signifies the male as the head of the family while the Moon
signifies the female as the head of home. Old age sets in and Saturn signifies the
stage where sexual desire is dead or defunct. One of the partners dies and the male
widower is indicated by Rähu while Ketu indicates the widow.
Sexual preferences are another issue altogether and Mercury or Saturn
connected with matters of sexuality indicate homosexuality as they are eunuch
planets.

Guëa is a property or characteristic of all created things. In the saàkhya
philosophy it is an ingredient or constituent of präkåti as the primary quality of all
created or existing beings. The first division is into three parts – satva, rajas and
tämas i.e. goodness, passion and darkness or virtue, foulness and ignorance
respectively. From the energy viewpoint, rajas guëa has excessive energy (passion)
that causes desire and creation. Tämas has low energy (darkness) that causes
ignorance and death while satva has balanced energy that causes virtue and
sustenance.
