CHOICE OF CAREER IN MANAGEMENT

Statement of Purpose

(Prepare a short essay of 600 words on yourself in the space provided below. You may wish to talk about your
background, significant events, accomplishments, experience at your workplace, extracurricular activities,
relationships with friends and family, career plans and how the Post Graduate Programme in Management from
IIMB fits into your dreams and ambitions. Please make sure that your essay forms a coherent whole.)

I find myself fortunate to be born in a family were my dreams were always encouraged. My father
taught me the importance of discipline in pursuing my goals, while my mother taught me how to stay
composed and accept challenges with a smile. My elder sister, an alumnus of IIM-K, helped in shaping
my dream of doing my MBA.

I picked up my passion for chess watching my elder sister play against my father. By the time I reached
the 6th grade, I would defeat both of them and eventually, I went on to win the gold medal at the district
level. Chess has taught me to be patient, innovative, and well-planned yet adaptable.

During my schooling days I worked on a project where we collected old newspapers from households,
sold it to papermills and donated the proceeds for education of tribal children. We were able to sponsor
education for around 10 kids. This experience taught me the value of giving back to society and honed
my interpersonal skills.

After schooling, I went on to join HR College where I volunteered and organised many fests and events
as part of the student’s council and multiple clubs. Academically, I chose to pursue a career in commerce
and became a Chartered Accountant clearing all my exams in the first attempt.

I chose to do my CA articleship in a mid-size firm as I wanted to work in both Tax and Audit. Fortunately,
I got the opportunity to work directly under the partner Mrs. Mala Todarwal. During my assignments
across audit, taxation and management consulting, some of my observations received a lot of
appreciation from the clients and the partner. For example, I pre-empted a case of double payment by
one of our biggest clients and hence saved the organization 75 lakh rupees. Also, due to a health
condition of my manager in my very first year, I had to single-handedly manage the client location in the
crucial months of February and March which was highly appreciated. The three years of my articleship
taught me teamwork, multitasking and time management.

I got my first job offer within the first hour of declaration of my CA results. At the time, I was working at
the office of my client Import Express India Pvt. Ltd., an e-commerce company. As soon as my director
came to know about the result, he offered me the challenging yet exciting role of handling all accounts,
finance and matters relating to law for the whole group company.

I was leading a team of four members including a CA, and our team contributed significantly to the
organization. One of the major changes we brought about was in the pricing mechanism. While initially
the same overhead cost was applied uniformly across products, we worked out actual overheads
incurred by the company and allocated them based on price buckets of the products. This led to an
increase in sales volume of low priced goods, and thus the month of Feb which sees around 10% dip
ended up seeing a 3% rise in volume. Further, I bifurcated shipping costs into domestic and international
highlighting that domestic freight was turning out to be more expensive. The management acted on this
insight leading to around 40% reduction in domestic shipping costs.

My idea and suggestions could only create impact because the company leadership took action on
them. These experiences drew me to take up a career in management as I wish to be a position where I
could directly impact business. I see myself in the leadership role in the finance vertical of a corporate in
the long run.

To be a business leader, it is essential to study business in depth which an MBA program will enable me
to do. The proficient faculty, the stellar alumni network, and a diverse peer group incline me to pursue
PGP in management from IIM Bangalore.
