A new search tool is now available to the general public that will impact both positively and
negatively on law enforcement. The website, www.peekyou.com, is provided by Google ™ and
utilizes the vast search machine to find people mainly through social networking sites. Searches can
be conducted using many discriminators, such as first name, last name, country, state, city, gender, or
age range. Searches can also be conducted for employers or schools attended, whether grammar,
middle, or high schools, universities, etc. Word searches can also be made for matches of “tags”
under the categories of life, work or school. Tags are synopses of a person’s interests or experiences
as self-described in social networking sites or blogs. For example, a search of the word “drugs” in
the life category found 3,677 matches.

A search conducted using US Drug Enforcement Administration under “work” found over 40 names,
mostly of retired personnel, but also of some current employees. Care should be taken when putting
information into non-controlled venues. However, this search engine can also be of assistance during
investigations, as a means of gathering additional data on targets of investigation or possibly as a
means of tracking suspects. This will most certainly be of greater assistance in investigations
targeting younger and more technologically savvy criminals. Investigators must keep in mind that
false information can be posted to such sites as easily as correct information, so leads need to be
verified as in other data sources.
