SAP Warehouse Management-Control Cycle –

Definition, Prerequisite and Procedure

for Staging Material for Production Order

Control Cycle (WM-PP)

Production supply from the warehouse is a stock removal operation.
Staging components for production from the warehouse is mapped as an “other goods
issue” in Logistic Execution.
There are two ways of staging components for production from the warehouse :
Without using WM-PP interface
With using WM-PP interface.
Staging Components without WM-PP interface

If you do not use WM-PP interface, then goods issue posting for the work order /
process order will generate a transfer requirement in an interim storage area, the “Goods
issue area”.
The components requested are removed from interim storage area using a transfer order
which completes the staging process.

Staging Components with WM-PP interface

If using WM-PP interface, then the process flow is reversed.
Transfer posting is not created as a result of goods issue posting, but rather using
request created with special transaction.
The requested components are not transferred to goods issue area, instead sent to a
separate interim storage type, “Production supply”.
Stocks in interim storage area are cleared immediately as a result of IM posting, so
there is no new transfer requirement.

Advantages of using WM-PP Interface

You can backflush components, that is, post the goods issue after completion of the
production process together with the confirmation of the work order.
You can fine tune how and where you stage materials for production using control
cycles. This means that you can stage some components for a specific order, others for
multiple orders, and others with no reference at all to an order.
If there are changes to the quantities or dates/times in the plant order, the system can adjust the
transfer requirement automatically or create it again.

Terminology that are used in WM-PP interface

Production Supply Area: Production supply areas (PSAs) are used for material
replenishment and are situated directly on the shop floor in the production department. The
supply area groups work centers near production storage bins based on the material staging
methods. You need to enter the PSA in the work center master data.

To create production supply areas in Customizing for Warehouse Management in your system,
choose : Logistics Execution - Warehouse Management – Interfaces - Define Production.
Definition
Control Cycle : The control cycle record is made up of the plant, production
supply area and material and determines for the WM- PP interface the production storage
bin and the type of material staging that is used. The production storage bin is defined by
the whole key: warehouse number, storage type and bin.

Definition
Work Center : Operations are carried out at a work center. In SAP R/3 System work
centers are business objects that can represent the following real work centers, for
example:

Machines, machine groups

Production lines
Assembly work centers
Employees, groups of employees

To create control cycles choose : Logistics –Production- Master data-Work centers

Prerequisite

Inorder to use WM-PP interface, then one has to create atleast one production supply area
and atleast one control cycle for staging in Warehouse Management.
If you decide to use the WM-PP interface, you have to activate it for your warehouse
number(s). Once you have activated the interface, the transfer requirements for material
staging are created in special transactions (LP10, LP11, and LP12), not as a result of
Inventory Management postings.
Pictorial view of how Production supply area and Control cycle looks like is shown in next screen.

As can be seen in above screen shot, PSA groups together work center. So, its very
important in deciding how many PSA’s are required . You have to pay considerable
attention to the distribution of work centers you want to supply with materials from
Warehouse.
During creation of Control cycle, you can specify how and where you want to stage materials from
the warehouse. You can specify the type of staging using the Material Staging Indicator.
Prerequisite

• There are 4 material staging indicators that are available in control cycle screen :
Indicator 1 (Pick Part), also known as Dispensed material
Indicator 2 (Crate Part)
Indicator 3 (Release order part), also known as Line side material
Indicator 4 (Manual Staging)
Procedure

When ever a production order is released, there will be couple of materials which needs to
be issued to this order from warehouse inorder to manufacture final product.
These materials that needs to be issued to a order from a warehouse can either be a
dispensed or line side material.
Starting from next screen I will explain how to issue line side material to a order. Procedure

Staging of materials to production order starts only once the order is released.
As soon as the order is released, you can start staging line side and dispensed materials.
Now how will one know which are all materials that are to be issued either through LP10
(for Dispensed Material) and LP12 (for Line side Material).
Inorder to know this please execute COR3 transaction to display the process order and in the initial
screen enter the process order number and press enter and in the next screen follow below path :
GOTO – LISTS – WM PICK LIST. Please see below screen shot of what you see once you go to
this path.

Procedure

In the above screen shot you can also see “WM Material Staging” button. This button can
only be used for Dispensed material. However for line side material you have to execute
transaction LP12.
Now we know that material456 is a line side material and needs to be staged through LP12. So,
please execute LP12

transaction.

Procedure

In the above screen shot you can see that for material456 system displayed storage bin,
requirement Qty, Storage Bin Qty and also open TR Qty(if any).
System showed a storage bin which is actually assigned for this material in control cycle
And if you see Storage Bin Qty, this is the Qty that is actually present in this storage bin.
Also Requirement Qty is 0.06 KG, which is actually required for this process order.
Now if you go through above statements carefully, system is actually trying to say that ,
this bin has sufficient Qty to meet for this process order. So, no need to do anything from
WM perspective.
Again if the Storage bin Qty was less than the Requirement Qty, then you have to mention the
required Qty in Requested Qty field and then click on “WM Material Staging” button. This will
create a transfer requirement and also updates TR Open field (can be seen in slide 19) with the qty
requested. Procedure

Qty in TR Open field says that, there is a open transfer requirement for respective Qty
which once processed will replenish storage bin 0022PKLPSA. This way stock in storage
bin 0022PKLPSA is increased.
Once you make sure that there is sufficient Qty available in respective storage bin to stage
line side material. Please execute CO60 transaction to issue line side material, material456
for respective process order through PI sheet.
In the initial screen of CO60, please enter the plant and respective process order and click
F8.

After accepting the message system will do goods issue both from Inventory Management
and from Warehouse Management, which can be seen from the generated material
document.
This way system updates the respective process order against the respective material, saying goods
issue for this material is done and also it will reduce issued Qty from storage bin 0022PKLPSA
(from WM perspective) and also reduces stock from respective Storage Location ( from IM
perspective).
