Abuse Prevention Training Plan

Audience: Staff, Students, Volunteers (excluding Management)

Overview
Rationale for Training
Due to a revision to the Prevention, Reporting & Investigation of Abuse & Neglect Policy (ADM-01-03-05) in January of 2016, employees of Sample Estates
require re-training to ensure the revised contents of the policy are communicated and understood by all levels of staff at the LTC, as well as for the purposes of
annual re-training and on-boarding.

Course Delivery

Delivery Method: Face to Face Total Duration: 4 hours

Learning Outcomes: 1. Participants will learn the definition of abuse in the context of long-term care, including the categories of abuse and how incidents
are classified within each category
2. Participants will learn about each component of the LTC’s abuse prevention plan, the risk factors/conditions associated with resident
abuse, the roles and responsibilities of management and staff in preventing abuse, and how incidents of abuse are evaluated
3. Participants will learn about both the internal and external reporting requirements after an incident of abuse has occurred, including
the correct use of reporting documentation

Section One: Introduction/Overview

Learning Outcome/Objectives:

1. Participants will learn the definition of abuse in the context of long-term care, including the categories of abuse and how incidents are classified within each
category
a. Participants will be able to summarize the Ministry definition of abuse, as documented by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (2004)
b. Participants will be able to identify the categories of abuse and their definitions according to the LTCHA (2007)
c. Participants will be able to classify incidents of abuse under the correct abuse category from the LTCHA (2007)
d. Participants will be able to recognize common situations that do not constitute abuse under the LTCHA (2007)

 Employees of the Region of Durham must respect the rights of LTC
residents in all circumstances
 This training will review the Region’s Prevention, Reporting &
Investigation of Abuse and Neglect Policy
 This knowledge will ensure employees are educated in abuse
prevention to actively prevent and report incidents of abuse and
neglect
• Lead-In Activity (as part of rationale)
 Present an example from your own experience of an abuse incident you
are aware of at an LTC (if any).
 Maintain confidentiality during this anecdote by briefly summarizing the
situation without specific detail
 Highlight this story as an example of the importance of abuse prevention
programs
