● Mac and Windows OS from the point of view of multimedia development and deployment.
○ Why Mac?
■ Thunderbolt 3 for large file transfers.
■ 5k Resolution and has SSD.
■ Features P3 color, which makes 25 percent more colors available than standard RGB
which makes for more true-to-life pictures with realistically vivid details.
■ Exclusive high end editing softwares such as final cut pro for non-linear video editing
software and Logic Pro X used to make precise edits to sounds, quickly navigate around
project and even perform on instruments directly from the keyboard.
■ Applications like Pixelmator and Sketch are amazing and much better for image editing
and graphic design tool.
■ 4GB of GDDR5 memory comes standard on the top configuration, giving fluid, real-time
performance for pro tasks like rendering 3D titles.
■ High Efficiency Image Format which means better quality and less storage consumption.
■ The built-in font chooser on a mac is better than Windows programs, and the built-in
font manager is simple and powerful.
■ Battery life is better lasts up to hours.
■ Metal for Mac lets faster execution of graphics in comparison to DirectX of windows.
■ Touch ID which provides instant security to the data.
■ Free Software like Garageband provide access to large collection of music as well as
create podcasts and music on the go.
■ Anywhere access of file on any device like files made on iPad can easily be accessed on
MacBook.
■ Sharing of files is easier whether it be an image or a document.
■ Common editing tools are free.
■ Software Optimization.

○ Why Windows?
■ Costs comparatively less in comparison with same specs of mac.
■ Open source softwares are easily available.
■ For development and deployment of applications it’s more user friendly.
■ The ability to upgrade and customize hardware to specific needs.
■ 3D development has become easier.
■ Commonly used across the world.
■ Gaming environment is much better.
■ Best Driver Support.
■ Large amount of free and shareware.
● Why would you develop on one operating system when majority are using other?
○ Mac
■ Macs are able to run all the main operating systems available today and with
certain software like Parallels Desktop; can run more than one OS
simultaneously.
■ The Mac OS runs on a UNIX base which makes it very stable, secure and easy to
use.
■ The displayed graphical interface is also user friendly.
■ Gives recent applications access.
■ Built for professionals.
■ No antivirus is required as it’s comparatively it's safer.
■ Problem based updates are available.
■ Better customer support.
■ Faster Execution.
■ Mac OS is very stable because all its parts are designed, manufactured and
tested by one company.
○ Windows
■ Several companies that make and distribute windows operating system devices
and they include HP, Dell, Acer, Toshiba, Lenovo, Gateway, and Samsung this
makes it possible to choose from wide range.
■ It’s a general purpose system.
■ Hardware customization is easy.
■ A lot of people find it easier to use as the developers of the software have
maintained its basic features from the earlier versions to the most recent
updates.
■ A large selection of applications and software catering to different purposes.
■ There is backward compatibility, as the older versions can still work with more
current Windows versions.
■ New hardware is easily recognized by this OS.
● What about the cross platform communication multimedia environment.
○ Both have MS Office so basic documents can easily be shared.
○ As many common softwares exist like adobe and even conversion of files is easier so all
types of files can easily be accessed.
○ Files can be easily transferred using different modes like Bluetooth, external devices.
○ Hard disks can run in both devices if the ExFat format is there so large amount of data
can be transmitted easily.

● History of this platform and how is it relevant to multimedia point of view.

○ Windows
■ The first Microsoft Windows version, Windows 1.0, was released in November
1985. The initial versions of Windows OS were generally extended versions of
MS-DOS, the OS using text-form rather than graphics for user interface. They did
contain graphical interface, but only for certain software, and the user came out
of graphical interface once the user closed the window of the application
software.
■ Later, major success came with release of Windows 3.0, which allowed better
multi-tasking of application software of MS-DOS, and could be run in Protected
or Enhanced or Standard modes; and, by this time, VGA cards were also available
for PCs, letting, thus, Windows 3.0 emerge as a serious threat to Apple Mac OS.
Later, ‘multimedia’ versions of Windows 3.0 were also released, first comprising
of a sound card as well as a CD-ROM drive.
○ Mac
■ Apple Macintosh project started in late 1970s with Jef Raskin & aimed to
produce low cost computer applications. First Mac OS, a complete GUI, had 64
kilobit of RAM and used 6809E Motorola microprocessor, as well as supported
256X256 pixel black-and-white bitmap display. Later, it was improved to support
Motorola 68000 microprocessor, with 8 MHz of clock speed, 384×256 pixel
display, 128 KB of RAM (expandable to 512 KB of RAM); the final product's
screen was a 9-inch, 512x342 pixel monochrome display. Macintosh user
interface was partially influenced by technology seen at Xerox PARC.
■ Macintosh 128K came with 2 applications- MacWrite and MacPaint, but since
programs needed to be rewritten in a different format for the Mac 128K, since it
was a completely graphically oriented user interface, and the programmers shied
away from this idea.
● Pros and cons of both platforms from multimedia POV
○ Windows
■ Pros
● More than 80% of the desktop computers in the world run some sort of
Windows operating system.
● You won’t have any trouble finding hardware and drivers.
● You won’t have any problems finding support.
● Most widely supported operating system for games.
● Large shareware and freeware application library.
■ Cons
● The most prone operating system for spyware and virus applications.
● You are going to need support.
● General instability due to the sheer number of possible configurations.
● Poor security.
● Limited access to the library of free open source software.

○ Mac
■ Pros
● Easier to use for the non-technical.
● Content creation is its strength.
● More secure than Windows due to its UNIX base
● More stable than Windows due to Apple’s tighter control over the
configuration options and its UNIX base.
● Almost no spyware or virus applications.
● More powerful than Windows due to its UNIX base.
● You have almost complete access to the enormous library of free open
source applications.
■ Cons
● More expensive upfront than other choices. Some would say this is offset
by less maintenance required over the life of the system.
● Less support. You have to go to Apple for all your hardware problems.
● Less hardware choices than Windows. For your average user this isn’t
much of a problem. All the common hardware types will work.
● More complex than Windows due to its UNIX base. This really isn’t a
major con because OSX does a great job of hiding this complexity from
the end user.
