Key Issues

1. Why is API mediation central to the hybrid integration platform (HIP)?

2. What solutions are available for API mediation in the HIP?
3. How can you balance short-term integration use cases with
long-term investment?

When Should You Choose Full Life Cycle API Management?
 Choose full life cycle API management if your core objectives are:
– Governance,
– Promotion, and
– Life cycle management of APIs

When Should You Choose iPaaS?

 Adopt iPaaS for cloud and on-premises

integration, and/or the creation of APIs from
existing applications and data
 iPaaS products target the specific problem
of handling the three core integration
patterns in a cloud-managed platform as a
service (PaaS):
1. Data synchronization
2. Multistep processes
3. Service composition

 Increasingly provides API management also

Key Issues

1. Why is API mediation central to the hybrid integration platform (HIP)?

2. What solutions are available for API mediation in the HIP?
3. How can you balance short-term integration use cases with
long-term investment?

Who Pays for Integration?

 Cost of deployment is just the start

 Projects may provide the initial funding, but
it's just the start of the total cost
of ownership:
– Customization, maintenance and upgrades are
where the money goes
 Consider instead a shared ownership model,
through an IT shared services organization

21 © 2017 Gartner, Inc. and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

Case Study — Government Agency

 Multiple user channels:

– Mobile and web.

 No direct engagement with IT:

– It required its lines of business, service providers and partners to consume and
manipulate information without direct engagement with its IT organization.
 Already had an ESB:
– But felt the ESB did not address demands of its partners and solution providers.

Making the Decision

 Had to provide a short-term ROI, specifically in a $

chargeback model.
 It was found that most of the planned applications
focused on mobilizing existing systems.
 Planned mobile apps were intended to connect into
systems that commonly have APIs available.
APIs

The Decision

 Mobile back-end services were chosen

 This provided a starting point to developing a HIP
– Integration vision includes the use of the existing ESB with a service registry
– Building block toward a full hybrid integration platform

Action Plan

Monday Morning:
 Identity mediated API opportunities in your organization
 Investigate the current integration capabilities that exist
Next 90 Days:
 Build funding models for integration
 Assemble an integration strategy team to ensure holistic needs are identified
and represented
Next 12 Months:
 Formulate long-term infrastructure plans and strategy
 Incrementally build out the HIP based on ROI and business case
