ABSTRACT

Verbs at the Second Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Alla. Thesis, English

The research aimed at finding out the effectiveness of systemic approach
in teaching irregular verbs. The researcher applied pre-experimental design. The
population of this research was the second grade students’ of SMA Negeri 1 Alla
in academic year 2015/2016 which consist of 276 students. The sample was taken
by using purposive random sampling technique. The sample was XI MIPA 1
consisted of 32 students. The data were obtained through grammar test which
consists of four different test forms namely scrambled letters, matching words,
fill-in the blank, and making sentences test. Those tests were given as pre-test and
post-test and it was aimed to know the students’ mastery of irregular verbs in this
case their understanding about spelling, pronunciation, meaning, use, usage and
conjugation of irregular verbs.
The result of data analysis showed that the students’ score in post-test was
higher than the students score in pre-test. It was proven by the mean score of post-
test (81.97) which was higher than the mean score of pretest (62.59). It was also
proven by the score from t-test value that was lower than 0.05 which was
0.00<0.05. Based on the findings and discussion of the study, it is concluded that
the use of systemic approach in teaching irregular verbs to second grade students
of SMA Negeri 1 Alla was effective, and it is very important to teach the whole
components of irregular verbs systemically because the completeness of materials
will determine the effectiveness of learning process.

degree of Sarjana Pendidikan at English Education study program of English

Department, Faculty Department, State University of Makassar. Salam and

Shalawat are addressed to the final, chosen, and religious messenger, the Prophet

Muhammad SAW.

Many problems had been encountered by the researcher during the writing

of this thesis. Those problems would not have been solved without any help,

motivation, supports, suggestions, critics, guidance, assistance, and advice from

many people. Therefore, the researcher would express her deepest appreciation

and thanks to all of them.

First, her greatest gratitude goes to her beloved parents Syarif and Maharia,

for their love, advices, moral, spiritual encouragement and financial support, to

her beloved sisters Kasmiati, Mahirah, S.Pd.i., Sulhijrah, S.ST., Karmila and

Annisa , and also her beloved brothers Kadir and Kamiluddin, S.T., for their

lecturers of FBS UNM for all knowledge that has been given to her. The

researcher also gives special appreciation to her beloved someone Ardi A, S.T

who always support her to finish this thesis and all her friends, especially English

Education A Academic Year 2012, especially for her best friend, Sry Wahyuni,

Hariyanti, and Sitti Aminah. And special thank to Nur Hikma, Rini Anriani, Siti

Rahma, and Gusnita who have helped her many things and others who could not

be mentioned one by one,for their help, sharing, encouragement,laugh and

togetherness.

Finally, the researcher surely realized that this research is still far from being

perfect. Therefore, constructive criticism and suggestion would always be
