Tom Martino to receive BPAA Victor Lerner Memorial Medal
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Bowling Proprietors'
Association of America (BPAA) is proud to announce
the recipients of the 2018 Bowling Industry Service
Awards, some of the most prestigious awards pre-
sented by the bowling industry.
Tom Martino (Majestic Lanes, Hopelawn, New
Jersey) has been selected as the 2018 BPAA Hall of
Fame Inductee and recipient of the Victor Lerner
Memorial Medal. The Lerner Medal is the highest
honor awarded by the BPAA and recognizes an indi-
vidual for a lifetime of service to the bowling indus-
try and represents the recipient's induction into
BPAA's Hall of Fame, located at the International
Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame in Arlington,
Texas.
Mr. Martino entered the bowling industry more
than 40 years ago and served not only at the state
level but on national committees as well. He served
as treasurer of the Bowling Proprietors’ Association
of America (BPAA) for six years and as president
from 2014-2016. He currently is chairman of Strike
Ten Entertainment.
Diane Voight (Community Bowling Centers,
Livonia, Michigan) will be recognized with the
President’s Medal for her many contributions and
years of service to the BPAA, not only as an At-Large
Director on the BPAA Board of Directors but also as
past Chairman of the Executive Evaluation
Committee and current member of the Nominating
Committee. The President’s Medal is given to an
individual judged to have given exceptional support
and/or made significant contributions to the associa-
tion in the eyes of the current BPAA president.

Award, named after BPAA's long-time chief execu-
tive officer, "Chief" Wapensky. Mr. Blough is being
recognized for his 50 years of passion and enthusi-
asm for the sport of bowling. He currently serves as
the President of the BPA of Pennsylvania, is a mem-
ber of the BPAA Board of Directors, as well as the
Multi Unit Bowling Information Group (MUBIG).
Shannon O’Keefe (O’Fallon, Illinois) was select-
ed to receive the Dick Weber Bowling Ambassador
Award, named after the legendary bowling icon, rec-
ognizing her passion for the game and sport of bowl-
ing, both on and off the lanes.
Jack McCarthy (Fern Valley Strike & Spare,
Louisville, Kentucky) will be recognized with the
Special Project award for his efforts in reviving the
“Pin Car” which is in production and set to debut at
International Bowl Expo 2018.
Keith Hamilton (Chicago) receives the 2018
Media Award. A member of the Luby Publishing
team for more than 30 years, he currently is president
of Luby Publishing as well as an award-winning jour-
nalist.

Committee Chairman, stated, "Again this year, the
committee had many conversations to select individ-
uals in our industry that lead with humble service and
passionate dedication, and we congratulate and thank
all our award winners for their countless contribu-
tions to our industry."
The Bowling Industry Service Awards will be pre-
sented at the Annual Awards Luncheon, Tuesday,
June 19, 2018, during International Bowl Expo 2018
at Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. The Lerner Memorial
Medal presentation will take place during the general
session on Wednesday morning.

“Going into the finals I felt like we were the underdogs,” said Duke.
“Mookie is a talented player and Bill is one of the best in the land
right now so we knew we were going to have our work cut out for us.
“We got through the semifinal match in good shape but right before
practice for the title match Chris was kind of lost and asked me ‘What
should I do?’ Chris is a guy who likes to play the inside part of the
lane and hook the ball, but I suggested he try playing outside where
I was playing and, sure enough, he made it work. We just started
striking and we were on our way.
“I don’t want to understate how big that 4-5 split conversion was,”
Duke added. “At that point the match still could have gone either way
if he had missed it, but that was a great shot.”
In the five-frame semifinal matches, the Duke/Paul team beat 2016
PBA Player of the Year EJ Tackett and Paul’s Rockets teammate,
James Harden, 109-90, and the Betts/O’Neill team beat the 2016 win-
ners, newly-elected Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens and
PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber, 130-73, to advance to the final
match.
The telecast also featured a one-game Baker format team match
with two-time PBA Tour winner DJ Archer of Houston, Paul, Harden,
fellow Texan Dino Castillo and Rockets forward Trevor Ariza mak-
ing up the Houston Strong team against 12-time Tour winner Sean
Rash, Betts, Owens and 2017 Teen Masters representatives Hannah
Diem of Seminole, Fla., and Logan Harvey of Titusville, Fla., mak-
ing up the Bowlero All-Stars team. The Bowlero All-Stars overcame
an open in the second frame to soundly defeat a struggling Houston
Strong team, 215-158.
In the third event of the telecast all of the participating celebrities,
including actor/comedian Oscar Nunez and Rockets guard Bobby
Brown, took part in the Go Bowling! Celebrity Super Clash sudden-
death shoot out where the low score in each frame was eliminated. It
came down to a dual against Owens and Ariza in the eighth frame
with Owens striking to win against Ariza’s eight count.
The Chris Paul Family Foundation strives to positively impact indi-
viduals and families by providing resources that enrich and strength-
en healthy development of strong communities.

Another Stellar Season for Jakob Butturff
Highlights 2017 PBA Regional Awards

Jakob Butturff of Chandler, Ariz.,
didn’t match his record-breaking
2016 season that included a record
nine PBA Regional wins, but he
did keep the momentum going
with four wins in 2017, and that
was enough to successfully defend
his PBA West and Northwest
Region Player of the Year honors.
Bowling in a combined nine
tournaments in the West and
Northwest, Butturff also compiled
three other top-five finishes which
included a second, third and a fifth
place while also leading his fellow
regional competitors with a 236
average.
Butturff’s accomplishments in
2017 were among the highlights of
the PBA Regional Award winners,

January 27th. Scotch Doubles is a

CHICAGO, Ill. (Jan. 23, 2018) - If he hasn’t already,

Australian two-hander Jason Belmonte is most cer-
tainly on the verge of adding his name to a list of elite
PBA icons.
Belmonte concluded the 2017 PBA Tour season by
winning the PBA World Championship at the age of
34. With his victory over fellow two-hander Jesper
Svensson of Sweden, 238-225, in the title match, the
Australian star collected his ninth career major title
and a record three in one season. He trails only PBA
greats Earl Anthony and Pete Weber who are tied at
the top of the all-time list of PBA major title winners
with 10 each.
Belmonte’s first assault on the majors record will
come when the PBA Tournament of Champions –
PBA’s signature championship – returns to its historic
home at AMF Riviera Lanes in the Akron suburb of
Fairlawn, Ohio.
“I’m honored to be one win away from arguably the
two best bowlers who ever lived on the all-time
Championship win at the recent GEICO PBA World
Series of Bowling IX. “I don’t know how I’ll feel if I
get to 10 majors, but I’ll tell you that winning No. 9
was a pretty good feeling.”

In all, Belmonte’s major wins make up more than
half of his 16 career PBA Tour titles and include a
record four USBC Masters titles (2013, 2014, 2015,

titles. Since winning his first major in the 2011
Players Championship at age 27, Belmonte has
won his nine major titles over a span of seven sea-
sons (2011-17). It took Anthony 11 seasons to win
his first nine majors since winning the 1973 PBA
National Championship for his first major (1973-
83), and it took Weber 26 seasons to accomplish
the same feat after winning the 1987 Tournament
of Champions in 1987 (1987-2012). Both Weber, a
right-handed bowler, and Anthony, a left-hander,
would go on to win their 10th major titles in the
next season they bowled.
Belmonte’s success using his two-handed style
has not been overlooked by the bowling world. His
influence has created a legion of young bowlers
who are taking up the two-handed delivery, and
with increasing levels of success.
“I had no idea that the technique would become
so popular,” Belmonte said. “However, I under-
stand that the more success I have – and other two-
handers as well – it will create more and more
awareness of the style and also intrigue for bowlers
to try it. I believe the style is now seen not as just
a gimmick style, but as a style to be taken serious-
ly by fans, coaches and bowlers around the world.”
After the TOC, Belmonte will compete in the Go
Bowling! 60th Anniversary Classic – a standard
PBA Tour event – at Woodland Bowl in

 2015) and two Barbasol PBA Players Championship
