Preface
With the exception of some open-ended problems, this Instructor's Solutions Manual
contains a solution to each of the numerical problems in the textbook An Introduction to
Mechanical Engineering, SI Version (Fourth Edition). The description and style of these
solutions (writing a brief approach, making sketches, keeping track of units, and discussing
and understanding the solution) are intended to guide students with respect to the
formatting, organization, and presentation of their own work.

In addition, the instructor supplements include a digital version of this manual, additional
Case Studies, and a set of Lecture Note PowerPoints. Our intention is that these resources
will be useful to instructors in several ways. First, instructors are able to easily import
photographs, drawings, and other art from the PowerPoints into their own handouts and
lectures without the burden of having to photocopy or scan from the textbook itself.
Second, since many courses today have companion web sites, instructors can use the
supplementary material to post electronic versions of solutions to their own problem sets.

We hope that you will find this Instructor's Solutions Manual to be a useful resource for
your own teaching of mechanical engineering courses at the freshman and sophomore
levels. As always, if you should have any comments on the textbook or manual, we would
certainly appreciate hearing from you.
