On the Graduationof the British OfficesAnnuity Experience,

(1863-1893), by the Graphic Method,by James Chatham,
F.I.A., F.F.A.*
1-HE Joint Committee on Mortality Investigation asked
Dr. Spraguesometime ago to graduate the AnnuityExperience
by the GraphicMethodwith the viewof determiningthe period
duringwhich selectionlasts ; but as he was too fullyoccupied
to allow of his personallyundertakingthe proposed graduation,
the workwas undertakenby the writeron principlesarrangedin
consultationwithDr. Sprague.
As the investigationwas to a great extentexperimental, the
femaleannuityexperience,in which class the observationsare
mostnumerous, was dealt with first. The numbersenteringat
each age are, comparativelyspeaking, small, and the numbersat
riskand the deaths, forfive ages at entry, were thereforeadded
togetherforeach of the 20 yearsfollowingthe date of purchase;
the groups so dealt with being those for ages at entry50-54,
55-59 . . . 80-84, and the results have been treatedas if they
wereforages at entry52, 57 ... 82. The numbersat risk and
the deaths thus obtained were then grouped in the manner
describedin Dr. Sprague's Paper on " The Graphic Method of
Adjusting MortalityTables" (J.I.A., xxvi,77), so as to bring
out the law which they follow. The results showed that,
although selectionenduresat some ages at entryfor a longer
period than 10 years, yet for all practicalpurposesit may be
taken as ceasing after that period. As a rule, the period
diminishesas the age at entrybecomes greater. The graduation
was thereforeproceededwithon the assumptionthat the period
duringwhich selection endureswas 10 years, and the ultimate
curveformed.
What may be called the initial curve, showingthe rate of
mortalityin the yearimmediatelyfollowingthe date of purchase,
was so regularthatverylittle adjustmentof it was necessary.
The partialcurvesshowinghow the adjusted mortality proceeds

the sevengroupsof ages at entry, the death-rateforthe second
yearafterentryis actuallyhigherthanthe rateforthe thirdyear,
while in a fifthit is only a little less. The rates of mortality
during each year followingpurchase were thus obtained for
quinquennialages at entry.
As the assumed age at entrywas not the true average age,
beforeinterpolatingfor the intermediateages, it was necessary
firstof all to correctthe rates so as to obtain the rates during
each year forexact quinquennial ages at entry. This was done
by first differences. Dr. Sprague's formulaof interpolation
(J.I. A.yxxii, 270) was then applied to the correctedrates so
found, and the rates at intermediateages obtained. When the
data weretoo scantyto admitof its application, the interpolation
proceededon theassumptionofconstantfourthorthirddifferences,
as thereexplained. It was found necessary, however,to slightly
adjust some of the figuresthus obtained,in order to have a
smootherprogressionin the ratesof mortality.
The maleannuityexperiencewas dealtwithin a similarmanner.
The regularity in the ratesobservedamongthe femaleannuitants
was not experiencedin thisinstance,as the numbersat riskand
the deathsare muchsmaller, being onlyabout one-third ; but the
same featureswerefound to be commonto both, namely,a rapid
increase in the rate of mortality immediatelyafterentry, and a
slackening of it althoughtheywerenotso pronounced
afterwards,
as in the case of the females.
Tables of l[x-t]+t, d[x_t]+t,p[x_t]+t, ?[*-«+& ei*-t]+t> iov both
males and femalesare appended.
The rates of Mortalityfor males and femalesmay now be
compared, and this is done in thefollowingTable forquinquennial
aees :

Thisis a severetestofthemethodofgraduationadopted,butthe
differences show that the rates proceed with great regularity.
The superiority of female annuitantlife to male is well-known^
and is clearlyshownin the aboveTable ; but it is not so generally
known that, as shown by the last two columns, the difference
betweenthe firstyear's rate and the ultimateis greaterin the
case of males than females. If insteadof the difference between
these two rates the ratio is compared, the above featurestill
holds good at the lower ages, but not at the higher. The
difference betweenthe two sexesforthe firstyear, given in the
fourthcolumn,steadilyincreasesthroughout, and is in everycase
less thanthe difference betweenthe ultimateratesin the seventh
column.
It will be interestingto see how the GovernmentAnnuity

The ratesforGovernment males in thefirstyearare verymuch

higher at the younger ages, and considerablyless at the older
ages, than in the new experience ; but this is probablydue to the
methodof adjustmentadopted. It is hardlylikelythatthe rate
for males at age 52 at entryis 85 per-cent greaterthanthatfor
females, while at age 77 it is only 7' per-centgreater. The
ultimaterate formales is, as was to be expected, almostinvariably
less than that of the new experience, because it appliesto four
years and upwards from purchase; but at age 62 it is very
considerablyless, and this is due to a suddenbreak in the curve
of mortalityat that age, caused probably by the joining
of two differentmethodsof graduation. The ratesforfemales,on

the otherhand,agreeverycloselywiththoseofthenewexperience,
notwithstanding the greater period during which selectionhas
been given effectto in it. The result is, however, that the
differences betweeen the two sexes do not run regularly - for
instance, thosein the fourthcolumnattain a maximumand then
diminish; but on the wholethe resultsofthe new experienceare
confirmed.
It will also be interesting
to see how the rates of Mortality
among assured lives compare with those of annuitants. The
graduatedratesforthe formerare not publishedyet; but it will
be sufficient to use in the meantimerates obtained from the
Unadjusted Whole-Life Assurance Experiencerecentlypublished,
relating to males and females who effectedpolicies with
participationin profits. The method by which they were
obtained is similar to that employed in the New Annuity
Experience, and they are given in the followingTable along
with those for annuitants. The ultimate rate for assured
liveshas been takenfromthe " AggregateTables", excludingthe
firstten yearsof assurance.

Dealing firstwithmales,it willbe seen thatboththefirstyear's

and the ultimaterateamong assuredlives,is, withone exception,
less thanthatforannuitants,showingthatthe medicalexamination
in the case of assured lives is much more efficacious than the
self-selectionin the case of annuitants. Withfemalesit is exactly
the opposite. In their case the rate, whetherfirstyear's or
ultimate,is, withone exception,greateramongassured lives than
annuitants. These results maybe somewhatmodifiedwhen the
adjustedratesare obtained, but it is probablethat the rates for
males and femaleswill be similarlyaffected.
