GUIDE CARD

Communicating and writing effectively is possible when you know how

to use irregular verbs.

As you go through the next card, it will help you in understanding and
using irregular verbs better.

An irregular verb is a verb in which the past tense is not formed by

adding the usual –ed of d ending.
Example:
dance — danced
played — played

There are 3 principal parts of the verb. The Infinitive, the sim-
ple past and the past participle. But for now, we will focus on
the past form of irregular verb. However, the infinitive and the
past participle are there, so you have a clear picture of the 3
forms.

Example:

Infinitive Past Past Participle

Swim Swam Swum
Buy Bought Bought
Take Took Taken
Burst Burst Burst
Beat Beat beaten

3
Irregular verbs change their past differently.
So, it is best if you are familiar with how they change their past form as
shown in the table below.

1. The infinitive and the simple past have the same form. There is no change in their
spellings.

Infinitive Simple Past

cut cut
hit hit
hurt hurt

2. Some irregular verbs change their middle vowels in the their past form.

Infinitive Simple Past
