DIGSI 5 V6.xx or higher

Guideline for Upgrading Projects incl. IEC 61850 to DIGSI 5 V6.xx or

higher
From DIGSI 5 V6.00 onwards, the complete IEC 61850 engineering is done with the Siemens IEC 61850
System Configurator (similar to recent DIGSI 4 versions). Due to the separation of the IEC 61850 engineer-
ing, additional steps must be executed with the previous DIGSI 5 installation before starting with V6.xx or
higher.

So if you want to upgrade existing projects including IEC 61850 (created with V5.00 or previous) to DIGSI 5
V06.xx or higher, read the guideline carefully and follow the steps described in the following sections.

Note: You have to follow the described steps for each of your projects! This guideline applies only if you are
using IEC 61850 in your project. If not, the upgrade workflow has not changed and you only have to perform
step 2 as usual.

Short summary:
1. Open the previous DIGSI 5 version, for example V5.00, open the project you want to upgrade to
V6.xx or higher, and export it in SCD format. Close DIGSI 5.
2. Install DIGSI 5 V6.xx or higher and import all required DDDs (used in the old DIGSI 5 project plus
new V6.xx or higher DDDs).
3. Open the IEC 61850 System Configurator (automatically installed with DIGSI 5 V6.xx or higher) and
select to open a project.
4. Select the SCD file from step 1 and confirm the dialog with Open. In order to create a new IEC pro-
ject, you now have to select a target path. Close the IEC 61850 System Configurator.
5. Start DIGSI 5 V6.xx or higher, open the old DIGSI project, and confirm to upgrade it.
6. When asked for a related IEC project, browse to the IEC project created in step 3 and select the
project SCD file.

Note: Siemens recommends saving everything (IEC project, DIGSI project, 3 Party project) under one par-
ent folder.

In the example, the project was called 110kVBerlinIECEngineering, and located under the common folder
110kVBerlin.

After the successful creation of the project and import of the old SCD file, you find your IEC 61850 devices
under IEDs. Close the IEC 61850 System Configurator now.

Step 5:

Start DIGSI 5 V6.xx or higher and open the old DIGSI project you want to upgrade.

DIGSI 5 recognizes that the project was created with a previous DIGSI 5 version and asks if you want to
upgrade now. Click OK.

Note: DIGSI 5 will not overwrite your old project but rename the new project automatically to e.g.
<OldProject>_V06.xx.

projects. Click OK.

Navigate to the IEC 61850 System Configurator project created in Step 3.

In the example, it was 110kVBerlinIECEngineering.
Confirm the assignment by clicking Save.

The data of the IEC 61850 System Configurator project is imported.
