Dear Shamsul,

How are you? I’m so happy that you have received an offer to
study in a boarding school. You’re the best student in school so you
deserve the offer.

I know you feel that the school is far from your home. Of
course you’ll miss your family and friends, and you may feel lonely at
times. However, you mentioned that it is an established school that
is well-known for its excellent academic performance. This means if
you accept the offer, you’ll get good education and do well in your
examination.

Even though you won’t be able to come home often, I am sure

that you will be able to adjust to the life there after a while. You’ll
make new friends. Besides, you will be taught by experienced
teachers who will be there to guide you in everything.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for you so I hope you
will accept the offer. If I’m given a place in such school, I would
definitely accept it.

Please send my regards to your family. Take care of yourself.

Bye for now.

A Visit to Kemaman Awesome Community Centre

On 24 September 2016, 3 teachers and 15 members of the

Recreation Club visited the new Kemaman Awesome Community
Centre near SMK Geliga. The purpose of the visit was to find out
how students can benefit from the facilities available at the centre.

This centre provides state-of-the-art facilities that are

suitable for young and the old alike. Firstly, the swimming pool. We
can go there to relax and enjoy ourselves. Besides, we can take
swimming lessons taught by certified swimming instructors.
Secondly, the cafeteria. It is opposite the swimming pool. It serves
drinks, snacks and meals at a very affordable price.

Moreover, badminton courts are also available at the centre.

There are four badminton courts where we can have friendly games
as well as competitions. The centre offers special rates for students
who want to book early.
Next, there is a library. We can visit this library to do
research and to borrow books. We can use the computers there to
do work or surf the Internet.

Finally, the conference rooms. They are equipped with audio

and visual facilities. We can book these rooms to hold meetings,
seminars and other private functions.

Having a community centre near our school is an advantage. We

should not miss the opportunity to use the facilities to rest and
relax.

picture and notes given, write a recount of the incident.

Night – open – windows – saw – robber – climbing – neighbour’s gate – overseas –

nobody – home – quickly – inform – parents – called - the police – loud shouts –
chased – tried to escape

When writing your recount:

 You may use the notes given

 State two ways to safeguard your house while you are away
 Add any other relevant information
 Write in not less than 150 words

It was a hot Tuesday night. I was about to open the windows of

my room when I saw a robber climbing up my neighbour’s gate. My
neighbours had told us that they were going overseas with their
children so no one would be home. I quickly ran down to the living
room to inform my parents.

My parents were watching televisions downstairs. After I told

them what I had witnessed, my father quickly called the police. My
mother and I kept a close eye on our neighbour’s house.

Within ten minutes, a patrol car arrived. Two police officers came
out from the patrol car. The first officer entered my neighbour’s
house while the second one waited outside.

My heart was beating fast as I wondered what would happen next.

Suddenly, I heard loud shouts coming from the house. A few minutes
later, I saw the robber dashing out of the house. The first officer
chased after him. The robber tried to escape but the second officer
who waited outside managed to catch him.

I think my neighbours had done the right thing by informing us

that they would be away on a holiday. We could help to watch over
their house. Besides, we can install alarm system in our house to
protect it from untoward incident as the saying ‘better safe than
sorry’.
SAMPLE 4 – DESCRIPTIVE/ ARTICLE

Deepavali is one of the major festivals celebrated in Malaysia. Based on the pictures and notes given,
write a description of the festival.

When writing out your description:

 You may use the notes given

 State two reasons why it is important to celebrate festivals in Malaysia
 Add any other relevant information
 Write in not less than 150 words

Deepavali is celebrated annually by the Hindus in Malaysia. It is

also known as the Festival of Lights. This festival symbolises the
triumph of good over evil. It is usually celebrated in November.

Preparation for Deepavali starts a few weeks earlier. The

Hindus will start cleaning the house, putting up new curtains and
replacing old furniture. The interior of the house is repainted and
decorated. Decorative lights and oil lamps are placed outside the
house. Families will make traditional cakes, sweet delicacies, biscuits
and other special treats. This is also the time to buy new clothes.

On Deepavali morning, everyone starts the day with a bath.

Then, they will visit the temple to offer prayers. After that, they
will have a grand breakfast of Indian delicacies such as curry, Indian
pancakes and hot coffee or tea. Soon, the guests will come to their
houses. Families will be kept busy serving their guests. The day ends
with the children and adults playing fireworks.

The celebration of Deepavali and other festivals in Malaysia is

important in cultivating neighbourliness. The ‘open house’ concept
has become a special Malaysian way of life. It is a symbol of our
warm hospitality. It is a great way for the different races to get to
know each other and to spend public holidays meaningfully.
SAMPLE 5 – SPEECH / TALK

You are the president of the English Language Society. You have been invited to give a talk on the
benefits of watching television to your society members.

Benefits:

 Watch the latest news

 Many educational programme
 Entertainment – convenient to watch movies at home
 Relax and de-stress

Good morning Cik Noorzatul, our society advisor, and fellow

members. As the President of the English Language Society, I have
been asked to give a talk about the benefits of watching television.

Television is a good source of the latest news and events

happening around the world. Thanks to modern technology, we are
able to get live coverage of events happening anywhere in the world.
There are many educational programmes on television too. We can
widen our general knowledge as well as our world view by watching
documentaries and other educational programmes.

Television is also a source of entertainment. It allows us to

watch movies with our family and friends at the comfort of our
home. This is convenient and helps save money. Moreover, it prevents
us from wasting time loitering in shopping malls or spending hours in
an Internet café. We can invite our friends over for a movie too.
Another benefit of watching television is that it is a good way to de-
stress after a tiring day. Watching comedies help us laugh and relax.

Modern televisions are equipped with advance technology which

not only allows us to watch programmes but surf the Internet or
play interactive games. We can save money which we otherwise would
spend at Internet cafes or video arcades.

So, there you have it dear friends, the benefits of watching

television.
