Reflection on NSTP 2 Immersion Activity in White Cross, San Juan

On a sunday morning, after my work, I went to White Cross in San Juan to do our

immersion activity in NSTP 2. When i arrived, i was greeted by a closed day care

center, a large garden and I thought “ahhhhh, so this is what an orphanage looks like”

not so much different from what I’ve seen in dramas on televisions. At around 8 am we

started our work. We were grouped into ten. I don’t know my groupmates because we

came from different sections. We decided to clean at the back where there are a lot of

trees. At that time, the kids at the orphanage started waking up. We heard some of

them crying and we assumed that most of them are just few months old. Hearing them

cry like that, i thought that this is really a cruel world. Children that age should be cared

for by their mothers, instead, they are there, in an orphanage, being taken care of by

caregivers. I reflected on it and thought that if someone isn’t ready to take care of a

child, they should not give birth, and should not do something to get them pregnant. On

the other hand, the other kids, by the age of 6-10 are preparing for a parade. They are

wearing gowns and they looked so cute in it.

I got the chance to know my groupmates and i became friends with some of

them. I learned that some of them are from other institutes and we get to share stories

about what we usually learn with our respective majors.

Sweeping is tiring and it was hot that morning but it was worth doing knowing that

we were able to help with the workers who usually clean the place. I was also able to

gain some friends.
