he 2018 Skate the Lake
weekend has come and
gone, and was a huge suc-
cess! The event was held at
Minnedosa Lake Saturday
and Sunday. There were
21 adult teams entered in
the hockey events with an
additional 10 youth teams.

For Rock the Lake,
the winning team was On
the Rocks, followed by La-
dies of the Lake and the
Hillside Stranglers. There
were a number of winning
teams in the various hock-
ey divisions. The winners
of the Atom division were
the Minnedosa Jets, for the
Novice division it was the
Clear Lake Cruisers, for
the Peewee division it was
the Bruisers and for the
Bantam division it was the
Minnedosa Bombers. The
ladies division was won
by the Nabbin G’s, and the
Men’s division winner was
Minnedosa

This year, when do-
ing the awards ceremony
at the end of the weekend,
Barrett was extremely hap-
py to see that the pavilion
was packed with specta-
tors. There was standing
room only, and she is look-
ing for a way to accom-
modate more people next
year. “We would love to get
some new ideas there”, said
Barrett.
This year, the chili coo-
koff that was such a huge
success last year, had to be
cancelled due to a lack of
registrations through the
Rec office. However, Bar-

they will try again, as there
were people asking about
it in the pavilion. Another
big change in the pavilion
this year was the switch
from Sleeman’s beer to
Farmery beer, which was
received positively by
those who attended, as
they appreciate the local
touch.
Some year’s Skate the
Lake has experienced ex-
tremely frigid tempera-
tures and last year was
exceptionally warm but
this year’s weather was just
about right for the outdoor
pond hockey and curling

weekend. It was cold, but
manageable, and everyone
seemed to be bundled up
appropriately.
“People were very
happy with how the curl-
ing went once they figured
out that you can’t really
control what is happen-
ing with lake ice as much
as you would be able to at
a curling rink,” explained
Barrett. “I think then they
just kind of let go of their
preconceived notions and
went with the flow, and
just had fun.”
