Neighboring Nodes

 The AV200 Powerline chipset has the ability to manage

up to 32 neighboring nodes
 Each visible AV200 device will consume one of these
slots
 This is due to the amount of information that must be
stored and managed internally for each neighboring
node

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Maximum Number of MAC Addresses

 The AV200 Powerline chipset also performs Layer-2

frame forwarding according to the IEEE 802.1D standard
 In order to do this, the embedded bridge inside each chip
needs to learn the location of all MAC addresses
involved in data communication
 The maximum size of the learning table for the AV200
Powerline adapter is 64

MDU Installations - 5 Steps

1. SITE SURVEY
2. REQUIREMENTS
3. PLANNING AND DESIGN
4. TESTING
5. INSTALLATION

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Site Survey

Information Gathering:
 How many floors are there in the building?
 How many rooms/units in each floor?
 How many users/devices will be connected to the network?
 What type of backbone media available?
 Where is the uplink to the Internet/WAN?
 Is there any router or switch?

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Site Survey

Powerline Backbone:
 How many electrical panels in the building?
 Is the electrical diagram available?
 Has the units/rooms their own power meter?
(power meters attenuate the signal)

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Requirements

All installation requirements are derived from the type of

application the network will serve
 ISP connection for all apartments/offices in a large
building
 A corporate/community network for all offices/apartments
 The addition of network segments to an existing network
 e.g. to cover wireless dead zones

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Requirements

Questions:
 How many VLANS / user groups are to be configured.
 Are there any QoS requirements?
 Are there any security considerations?

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Planning and Design
After Gathering Requirements:
 Start analyzing the information
 Remember each network segment should be consist of
one master and no more than 32 Slave/adapters
 If the house/building has a 3-phase electrical net grid
then you should choose from:
 Using couplers
 Using three adapters, one for each phase to inject the signal

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Testing
 Start by identifying the network segment

 A Powerline segment consists of a combination of a

group of outlets to be networked via Powerline media

 In order to identify network segments begin by locating

the broadband source

 You will identify the physical network by working

outwards from the broadband source

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Testing - Identify Segments
 A lack of signal represents the start of a new physical
segment
 Bring the AV200 Adapter forward to the new segment
and repeat process until all segments and outlets
throughput speeds have been mapped
 Use the AV200 Adapter in order to identify physical
network segments.
 Record the throughput speeds at each outlet so that you
may connect network adapters and specific devices such
as a VoIP phone to the fastest outlets possible.
 Continue this process until the AV200 Adapter registers no
network signal.

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Testing - Interconnecting Segments
 Data speeds across a specific network segment may be
slower than the theoretical maximum as a result of
 Quality of the material used in the network medium.
 Quality of solders and socket mounts.
 Distance between sockets.
 The number of workstations sharing the throughput.
 OS and protocol overhead.
 Noise across the power line medium from other appliances, or
from RF interference.

Installation - Specifying Requirements

Installation of a Powerline network is performed in 4 steps

 Specification of requirements.
 Identification of Powerline network segments.
 Planning the interconnection of network segments to one
another (creating a backbone).
 Installation/Configuration and Monitoring of network
adapters using Corinex AV200 Management Software
(Future)

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Installation – Identification of Segments
Planning Segment Interconnection
 Interconnections between segments should employ
different network media.
 This allows one to avoid accidentally creating overlapping
collision domains.
 This also ensures that you’ve limited the number of adapters that
exist on any segment—thus guaranteeing throughput speed
across the network segment.
 Coax cables and ethernet are two common backbone
types

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Installation - Interconnecting Segments
 Corinex recommends that the maximum distance of any
network segment is 300 m.
 Longer distances may be bridged through the use of 2
network adapters wired “back to back” with an Ethernet
cable.

Video, Voice, and Broadband Connectivity Solutions

Installation - Interconnecting Segments
 Data throughput among Corinex network adapters
across a given segment is shared 200 Mbps.

 The TCP throughput that can be achieved between 2

workstations can be up to 75 Mbps.

 TheUDP throughput that can be achieved is 95

Mbps.

Installation – Helpful Tips
Three tips for MDU Networking:

 Use Corinex filter to segment Coax networks

 Use Ethernet cable to extend networks

 Use VLANs to separate networks

Case Study - Network Design

 One AV200 PL Adapter acting as a MASTER Device

every two floors
 Four AV200 PL Adapter acting as slaves in each floor
 Define a unique network identifier to each master device
 A CISCO switch is used to deliver Ethernet signal to all
master devices
 The Switch will be used:
 To segment networks (VLANs)
 Provide Ethernet connections
 Eliminate network looping
