About the ACFE

Who We Are

The ACFE is the world's largest anti-fraud organization and premier provider of anti-fraud training
and education. Together with more than 80,000 members, the ACFE is reducing business fraud
world-wide and inspiring public confidence in the integrity and objectivity within the profession.

Based in Austin, Texas, the ACFE was founded in 1988 by preeminent fraud expert and author, Dr.
Joseph T. Wells, CFE, CPA. Dr. Wells’ insight as an accountant-turned-FBI agent led to the
formation of a common body of knowledge known today as fraud examination.

Local Chapters

ACFE chapters are organized by members who reside in a particular geographic region (i.e., a city
or country) and share an interest in the detection and deterrence of fraud. Chapters act as local
representatives of the ACFE, providing continued support for members worldwide.

As of today, there are 136 ACFE Chapters around the world.

Q1: What relevant certification/s is (are) supported by the organization? What is the cost to
take certification exam?

A1: Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) membership is open to Associate members who are
interested in taking their career to the next level by earning the standard of professional
excellence in the anti-fraud profession. The CFE credential is increasingly being designated
as a preferred credential in the hiring practices of businesses, government entities and law
enforcement agencies.

Become a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE)

Step 1 – Join the ACFE

You must be a member to take the CFE Exam and earn your CFE credential.

Step 2 – Prepare for the CFE Exam

ACFE offers different methods to prepare for the CFE Exam such as studying with
the CFE Exam Prep Course, attending the CFE Exam Review Course, and studying
on your own using the Fraud Examiners Manual.
Step 3 – Apply for the CFE Exam

A complete CFE Exam application with documentation is required to take the CFE
Exam. The CFE Exam application fee is $400. If you have purchased the CFE Exam
Prep Course, the fee is $300.

Step 4 – Pass the CFE Exam

The CFE Exam tests your knowledge and expertise in the four primary areas of fraud
examination: Financial Transactions & Fraud Schemes, Law, Investigation, and
Fraud Prevention & Deterrence.

Q2: What requirements does the organization have for continuing education requirements?

A2: To maintain your CFE Credential, you are required to earn at least 20 hours of Continuing
Professional Education (CPE) every 12-month period. At least 10 of these hours must relate
directly to the detection and deterrence of fraud and 2 hours must relate directly to ethics.

Q3: How does the organization support IT Auditors? Be specific.

A3: The organization conducts seminars, trainings, and conferences and publishes books and
manuals. They are able to share their knowledge and any updates about anti-fraud and
other related topics. Their books and manuals are written by leading practitioners from a
variety of fraud-related fields which suggests practical solutions that can be applied
immediately.

Q4: What publications are provided by the organization to its members? How does the
publication relate to IT Audits?

A4: Fraud Magazine – The ACFE’s bimonthly publication on white-collar crime and fraud
examination techniques.

FraudInfo – A free biweekly e-newsletter packed with the latest anti-fraud materials,
courses and events.

The Fraud Examiner – This monthly, members-only newsletter includes exclusive articles
and videos. Learn from field experts and CFEs the recent trends and techniques used to
take down fraudsters.
ACFE Insights – Find news, analysis and commentary on the global fight against fraud on
the ACFE’s official blog. Featuring blogs from ACFE staff, experts in the fields of digital
forensics, fraud risk management compliance and more.

Anti-Fraud Resource Guide – This quarterly publication is mailed to all ACFE members
and provides detailed listings of all of the ACFE’s learning events and materials. Find all of
the information you need regarding the latest anti-fraud seminars, conferences, self-
studies, books and ACFE merchandise.

Bookstore Catalog – Dig deeper into the most up-to-date publications and reference
materials keeping fraud fighters ahead of the curve. This biannual publication features the
most relevant books, manuals and online learning materials available, as well as ACFE
clothing, accessories and more.

 CFE Exam Review Course


Master the concepts you need to pass the CFE examination during a 4-day
instructor-led seminar. You'll benefit from the interactive format and expert
coaching, then be able to take the exam on-site
 Basic Courses
ACFE Basic Courses provide essential knowledge for all anti-fraud professionals.
These seminars offer knowledge you can use immediately, while also laying a
foundation for future professional development.
 Intermediate Courses
ACFE Intermediate Courses build on the basic level courses to broaden and deepen
your fraud-fighting knowledge and skills.
 Advanced Courses
ACFE Advanced Courses are designed for more experienced anti-fraud
professionals, offering opportunities to refine skills and develop expertise in
specific areas of fraud fighting.
 Overview Courses
ACFE Overview Courses provide a general review of a subject area from a broad
perspective. These programs may be appropriate for professionals at all
organizational levels.

Q6: Does a student membership program exist for the organization? If so, what is the cost for
student membership?
A6: The ACFE is committed to providing a comprehensive resource center for all students to
learn about the global threat of fraud and to help them prepare for careers in the anti-
fraud profession. They offer reduced membership fees and full access to the ACFE's
member resources to college students interested in fraud prevention and detection.
Student Associate membership is open to undergraduate students enrolled in 9 semester
hours (or equivalent), or graduate students enrolled in 6 semester hours (or equivalent) in
an accredited college or university. The organization offers the students $25 for the
membership.
