Field Laboratory 2 - Administration Page

Scope Statement
Field laboratories are designed to give participants an opportunity to observe and
perform under conditions that more closely approximate the real-world environment. In
this module, participants will view a variety of improvised explosives and handle
explosive components where safety guidelines permit. In addition, they will witness the
detonation of IEDs in several sizes and observe the dangers and destructive power of
these materials.
Terminal Learning Objectives (TLO)
At the conclusion of this field laboratory, participants will be able to recognize
components of an IED, identify the physical effects of various IEDs, and summarize
safety procedures that first responders should follow when responding to incidents with
improvised explosives and IEDs.
Enabling Learning Objectives (ELO)
F2-1 Recognize improvised explosives and IEDs that could be encountered
when responding to a bombing incident.

F2-2 Identify the destructive effects of various amounts and formulations of


improvised explosives.

F2-3 Summarize precautionary measures required to protect emergency


responders who come into contact with improvised explosives and IEDs.

Resources
• IRTB Course Handouts, including course evaluation forms, pre-test forms,
registration forms, self-evaluation, and travel reimbursement forms (one per
participant).
• Pencil or pen, protective glasses, badge, and nameplate (one per participant).
