ASSIGNMENT
Instructions:
 This assignment carries 5% weightage towards your final grade.
 Make neat and clear free body diagrams
 Show all necessary steps

Question No 1:
A crate being pulled to the right on a surface as shown in Figure 1.
a) Make Free body diagram and show all the external forces
acting on a crate at specific point.

Question No 2:
A lamp is suspended from a light chain fastened to the ceiling, as
shown in Figure 2.
a) Show all the forces acting on the lamp.
b) How much tension is exerted by the chain?

Question No 3:
A traffic light weighing 125 N hangs from a cable tied to two other
cables fastened to a support as shown in Figure 3. The upper cables
make angles of 37.0° and 53.0° with the horizontal.
a) Make the Free Body Diagram for lamp
b) Make the Free Body Diagram for the knot where the three
cables are joined.
c) Find the Tension in the three cables.

Question No 4:
A child named Stephen wants to reach an apple in a tree without
climbing the tree. Sitting in a chair connected to a rope that passes
over a frictionless pulley (Figure 4), Stephen pulls on the loose
end of the rope with such a force that the spring scale reads 250 N.
Pat’s weight is 320 N, and the chair weighs 160 N.
a) Draw free-body diagrams for Stephen
b) Draw free-body diagrams for the chair
c) Draw another diagram for Stephen and the chair
considered as one system.
d) Find the force Stephen exerts on the chair.

Question No 5:

If the coefficient of static friction µs between m and

2m and the inclined plane, and the system is in
equilibrium.
a) Make the Free body diagrams for all the
masses separately.
b) Find the mass M (in terms of m, g, and Ѳ)
c) Find the tensions T1 and T2 (in terms of m,
g, and Ѳ) Figure 5
