Homework 2 (due on March 9th on class)

Problem 1) Consider a cubical surface with sides of length L=1 meter. The electric field on the left
side (𝐸1 ) is uniform with a magnitude of 5 N/C and is perpendicular to the side of the cube. The
electric field on the right side (𝐸2 ) is uniform with a magnitude of 10 N/C and is also perpendicular
to the side of the cube. The electric field on the other surfaces are parallel to the surfaces. What is
the net amount of charge that is enclosed by the cube? (10 points)

Problem 2) A uniformly charged conducting sphere of Radius 0.6m has a surface charge density of
8.1 µC/𝑚2 .

(a) Fınd the total charge on the sphere?

(b) What is the total electric flux leaving the surface of the sphere?

(10 points)

Problem 3) A conducting sphere of radius 0.1m has an unknown charge. If the electric field, has
magnitude 3𝑥103 N/C and it is directed radially inward, is 0.15m from the center of the sphere, what
is the net charge on the sphere. (10 points)

Problem 4) A point charge +q is placed at the center of an electrically neutral, spherical conducting
shell with inner radius a and outer Radius b.

(a) What charge appears on inner surface

(b) What charge appears on outer surface
(c) What is the electric field at r<a
(d) What is the electric field at r<a<b
(e) What is the electric field at r>b
(f) Sketch the electric field lines for all three regions (r<a, r<a<b, r>b)

(20 points)
Porblem 5)

The figure represents the cross section of two large, non conducting, parallel plates with the uniform
and identical charge distributions σ. Find the electric field E at regions I (above the sheets), region II
(between the sheets), and regions III (below the sheets), and make a skecth of electric field lines at all
regions.

(Note: You can check the Gauss’s Law application of a non-conducting, uniform sheet of charge to

calculate electric field)

(10 points)

Problem 6) How many electrons must be added to an isolated spherical conductor of 32cm in diameter

to produce an electric field of 1150N/C just outside the surface? (10 points)

Problem 7) A cube has side of length L. It is placed with one corner at the origin as shown in the figure

⃗ 𝑘̂, where B,C and D are positive

⃗ 𝑖̂ + 𝐶 𝑗̂ − 𝐷
below. The electric field is uniform and given by 𝐸 = −𝐵

constants.(a) Find the electric flux through each of the six cube faces 𝑆1 , 𝑆2 , 𝑆3 , 𝑆4 , 𝑆5 , 𝑆6 (b) Find

the electric flux through the entire cube. (10 points)

Problem 8) A long line carrying uniform linear charge density 𝜆 = +50.0 𝜇𝐶/𝑚 runs parallel to and

10.0 cm from the surface of a large, flat plastic sheet that has a uniform surface charge density of

−100𝜇𝐶/𝑚2 on one side. Find the location of all points where an α particle would feel no force due

to this arrangement of charged objects. (10 points)

Problem 9) A spherically symmetric charge distribution has a charge density is given by 𝜌 = 𝑎/𝑟, where

a is constant. (Be aware charge density is not uniform, depends on r). Use Gauss’s law to find the

electric field.

Note: You need to find enclosed charge by integrating 𝜌. 𝑑𝑉, and note that dV for a spherical shell is

𝑑𝑉 = 4𝜋𝑟 2 𝑑𝑟

(10 points)

Bonus Problem :Find the electric field halfway between two charged concentric conducting cylinders

shown below when a charge 𝑞 = 3𝜇𝐶 is placed on the inner cylinder. (𝑟𝑎 = 2.5 𝑐𝑚 , 𝑟𝑏 = 5 𝑐𝑚, Length

of the cylinder L= 25 cm) (Credit: 25 points)
