Over the course of the semester you will be expected to be continually working on this
assignment. You have a choice of options for this semester assignment. It will be due
towards the end of the semester but there will be ͞check-ups͟ throughout the semester so that
I can monitor your progress. You will be graded on your effort and creativity, so please be sure
to put both into this project! Spelling and grammar will be part of your grade for all of the
options for this project. You are also expected to type up your project (ie. No handwritten
projects will be accepted ʹ the only exception to this would be the storybook assignment, but
you must seek prior approval before doing this).

In this option for a project you must gather 15 stories/articles about science. With each
article you must:

a.Y State where you found the story or article

b.Y Explain the science used in it (1 paragraph)
c.Y Tell why this story/article is interesting to you (1 paragraph)

Guidelines:

-Y You must find your 15 articles/stories from at least 3

  sources (ie. The Internet,
newspaper, magazine etc)
-Y at least 8 of articles must be discussing biology
-Y If you use the internet as a source, you must use reliable websites (ie. The science must
be good science)
-Y You can choose the format that you want to hand these articles in, as well as the format
for your write-ups. Remember that you are being graded on creativity and effort!

In this project you must create a storybook acceptable for an elementary student to
read. The story must be about biology
must be about one of the units we are studying this
semester. This book is not meant to be a reference book; it should be a creative story written
on an elementary level. Writing your story in this format will require you to fully understand the
topics you are covering since it is difficult to write a book designed for elementary students
without having a full understanding of the subject matter yourself. also, remember that a
elementary audience would like pictures so include as many pictures as you can in your book.
These pictures can be hand-drawn or computer-generated.
Guidelines:

-Y at least 8 ͞concepts͟ must be explained in the story. (ex. If I chose to write a story based
on the Ecological Organization unit I might explain the concepts of a food chain, food
web, habitat, niche etc.)
-Y The story must be in story book format and must be handed in as a hard copy. an
electronic copy will not be accepted.
-Y In addition to the required information above, your book must include a works cited
page. This page should be located at the end of the book and must include a minimum
of three different sources. (ie. The Internet, newspaper, magazine etc)
-Y If you use the internet as a source, you must use reliable websites (ie. The science must
be good science)

In this project you will write a research paper about a topic in biology. You must choose
a topic that is related to one of the units we will be studying in this semester. You must have
approval for your paper topic before you get too involved in the actual writing process.

Guidelines:

-Y a research paper is similar to an essay. There must be an introduction and conclusion as

well as a ͞body͟ which contains the ͞meat͟ of the essay.
-Y The essay must be [ pages in length and will also include a works cited page. This page
should be located at the end of the book and must include a minimum of three different
sources. (ie. The Internet, newspaper, magazine etc)
