Beginning French I

Les objectifs: Provide beginners with fundamental skills in listening, speaking, reading,
and writing French. The course will also address Francophone culture. The course covers:

 Vocabulary building
 Advanced verb tenses
 Object pronouns
 Functional language (travel, technology, history, art, personal life, work, social
problems)

Policies:

 Disruptive class behavior will be handled according to NEC policies (i.e.,


Academic Catalogue, 73-75).

 Academic dishonesty (e.g., cheating, plagiarism) will be handled according to


NEC policies (Academic Catalogue, 75): "F" on the test/assignment & reported to
Registrar; possible course failure if the test/assignment is "of major significance
in the total course." (Academic Catalogue, 76). A second instance may result in
expulsion. (Id.).

You will be tested each week on the prior chapter. Expect a midterm exam before mid-
semester break and a final in December. Additional assignments, including special
projects, essays, presentations, and readings, will be announced and will count as part of
the homework or exam grade. I will inform you about how these will apply.

The course blog, http://french1110.wordpress.com, will deliver most materials and


provide a space for homework, projects, and other evaluations. The blog is private: only
invited participants may read or post to it. You will select a username and password when
you first sign-in.

La méthodologie

We will discover grammar and vocabulary within specific situations - greetings, travel,
medicine, etc.... This is often called "sheltered" language learning: language within a
thematic shelter.
