Assignment on Environmental Care and Protection (Solid Waste Management)

1. Observe and take pictures of any local waste collection in your area. Make sure that
you are in one of the pictures.
2. As per your observation, discuss whether the garbage collection is being managed
properly.

I live in a small subdivision. It is arranged that every Tuesday and Friday will be the
days that the trash will be collected. So what people usually do is they take out trash
and put it in front of the house and wait for the trash to be collected by the “trash
collectors.” In my opinion, this would be an effective way if we are thinking about the
waste management standard in urban areas especially because we are sure that the
garbage in our area is being handled properly and we don’t have to worry about trash
bags scattered in our subdivision.

3. How can you help improve the solid waste management in your area? Suggest at
least three ways.

● We could start by segregating our own waste into biodegradable, non-

biodegradable, and recyclables in our own homes.
● Next would be if possible our subdivision should have a waste management
area, just like in japan where on certain days, biodegrables would be collected
first then next would be non-biodegrables and lastly would be recyclables. They
should have separate dump place with labels on them so that it would be easier
for trash collectors to get the trash.
● Once they are segregated, we could instruct the trash collectors to not take away
the recyclable materials so that we could donate or sell them instead.
